I am currently expecting this to debut at around $700-800 (hoping to be pleasantly surprised otherwise) and by the time it drops into a reasonable price nVidia will likely have the 9k series launching.

They already have....

The first pictures of the thing showing up is hardly it having launched, but it definitely seems like ATI/AMD will either have to introduce the thing below the price they would like to or they very likely won't be competitive...I just can't imagine that they were planning to release their card at a price that would compete with this thing at $450 at launch.

To Each Man, Responsibility

sure, it's fastest, but does it have HD graphics?

I kid. I kid.

Yup you should be able to play Crysis without too much trouble...just curious what type of 8800 do you have? GTX, GTS, GT?  And how much memory? 256, 320, 512, 640, 768?

GTS with 2 GB memory. is that enough :P

I'm still having fun with my GeForce6600... lol!

I always hold off from buying a new video card because I always want the best there is, but I can never afford the best!

Maybe its time for an upgrade though... I feel like I'm living in the stone age looking at all these spec sheets lately =/

By life end:

  • Wii- 100 million+
  • Xbox360- 35~40 million
  • PS3- 30 million
  • PSP- 30~32 million ------------- FAILURE
  • NDS- 85~90 million (Skeptical)  - FAILURE
  • NDS- 100 million+ (Optimistic) -- Success!

Your GTS can't have 2 GB of memory. That's insane for a graphics card. Nvidia's not there yet. If you have the old one, it's either 320 or 640. I forget what the new one has.

^^ Either way it will choke on high settings and very high/DX10 ain't gonna happen. Wouldn't worry though, apart from graphics & physics Crysis really isn't very good.

OT: I'll reserve judgement on this. I remember when they first launched the R600, some preliminary benchmarks were saying it was gonna outclass the 8 series. Turned out it wasn't even close.

Also, what is the test bed for the second set of data? the benchmarks are taken from completely different sites so it is not a like-for-like comparison. As much as I would like to see AMD on top again, I'm gonna have to call BS on this one.

I know (sorry); actually the setup was better for the Nvidia boards, so in 'real life' R680 should be better than the difference you see.

Hate to disappoint you, but that's not really the next generation - it's a rebadged dual 8800GT, which the R680 has a chance of matching due to a better dual-GPU driver and closer to native fabrication (two cards on one PCB vs. two PCBs).
