First it would be stupid to launch a year later than the competition without having a significant hardware advantage. Ask Sony.
Second when they don't compete with Wii U, they are aiming at a different audience. Like they did earlier this gen. MS was core only and Wii casuals only. So MS aims for core gamers, which need to have a reason to play the 360 and 20% is not enough.

BTW I thin all three are competitors, no matter what they say.

If Microsoft aims for a different audience then they don't have to be significantly more powerful. Just look at the Wii and the 360 for example.
However, for now it seems that Nintendo is trying to aim more for the core gamers with WiiU (just look at the multiplatform games that are already announced for it). So based on that and your assumption MS will be aiming for the casuals and not for the core (which would make it irrelevant if it is more powerful or not). Honestly, I don't think this will happen, I was just following your way of thinking here.

That is a bad example, because the 360 is significantly more powerful than the Wii.

I don't think the Wii is going after the core crowd ever again. They made so much money with the Wii and the DS that they want to aim at this audience again. Most of their franchises are more casual than core. Sure there is Zelda and Metroid for example but these are tiny compared to Pokemon or Mario Kart. I know we will have a discussion about what is core and what is casual now.

Anyway a new gen is always pretty random. Let's see what happens.

I think it's a good example. Wii launched one year later and wasn't nearly as powerful as the 360. We would have a similar situation if the "720" launches one year after WiiU and is less powerful (or let's say roughly just as powerful). And as I said, looking at the games currently announced for WiiU I think it's obvious that Nintendo aims way more for the core crowd than they did with the Wii. Of course they won't abadon the casuals (that would be stupid), but they won't focus on these types of gamers next gen as much as this gen. However, it's all just speculating at the moment. We only have real info about the WiiU, but not about the nextbox or PS4. So yeah. let's just wait.
