VICTORIA -- Vancouver Island's tech-industry is preparing to welcome one of the computer industry's largest players.
Microsoft plans to open up an office in downtown Victoria by January of next year. Its focus will be on video game development
50-60 people are scheduled to be hired in the coming month. According to Chris Robertson, the Technical Director for Microsoft Studios Victoria, the company hopes to find at least half of its future employees in Victoria.
Microsoft's arrival is being regarded as validation for an industry that has been quietly growing on Vancouver Island
"We have the largest industry in Victoria," says Marco Pimentel with Q College. He adds, "It has taken over from tourism".
Others believe the Island's lifestyle opportunities are to thank for the industry's success.
"I think it's just a long time coming. I think companies want to find places where their employees are happy, says Pimentel.
He believes Victoria is that place.
Eight Microsoft employees are currently working at a temporary location in the city. A permanent decision hasn't been decided on but the company says it will be downtown.
