8.2M is impressive indeed. ps360 gap should widen quite a bit this quarter.

Ya but Sony closed it 900k last Q so it should even up. Actually if they ship 7.3 this Q, then they've been on par for the last 15 months.

we'll see for sure soon enough but i'd take a bet that they won't ship 7.3 this Q.  that last Q sony has a history of outshipping everyone which i take to mean they just push their holiday shipments out the door sooner.

If Sony is on target to 15m FY then they needs to ship over 7 million this quarter.

which gives me a solid 300k in breathing room. :P

6.8 - 7.2M.

No. 7.1-7.5m.

And I wouldn't be surprised if Sony shipped more than 7.5m.

I assume a 65.8m install base means sold, not shipped?

its shipped.

According to every definition I could find online it means number of units sold and in use at any given time.

Confusion raining down from up high.

For a financial release like this MS reports what was sold to the buyer - in the case of consoles the buyer is retailers, not consumers, hence shipped equals sold to retailers.  The retailers sell to us and can pass back the info to MS but they don't have to and probably not all do - certainly outside US not all will.  Therefore while MS can aim to track sold to consumers they only know sold to retailers for sure.

The 65.8 will be sold to retail because that's what MS does and where the revenue recorded from - note the revenue will be the price the retailer pays vs what we pay which will normally inclue a small markup for the retailer which is the other reason why MS has to use shipped to retail as there would be a disconnect with the revenue they recieve and the actual price paid if they used sold to consumer.

he said install base, not shipped or sold.

What you guys are talking about??? 65.8m is shipped #FACT.

Edit - Fixed the number... typo.

I was just saying what he stated as reasonable was giving the def of shipped vs sold. Not sure what the original article said, but install base usually means in the hand of consumers and in use. That was all.

Wating for Nintendo charts which will show how much 360 is overtracked at the moment.

The 65.8 is from MS financial release not Ballmer's verbal statements - I'm not talking about his comments at all which are now simply a verbal approximation of what has been clearly stated.

Overall Microsoft saw record revenue this quater, with $20.9b, and profit of $6.62b. (Sony hasnt made a cent of profit in 4 years)

X360 shipments reached 8.2m, a record Q for the now 6 year old machine, up 1.9m units over the same quater last year.

US software attach ratio went up from 8.9 to 9.1.

The EDD division made a profit of $528m

So far for FY 2012 (July to present) the EDD has made $880m profit

As of this Q by my calculations, the EDD has profited over $3.5b since FY 2008 when they started profiting on the X360

All I need to know to see MS truly outdid itself this year :)

No they don't, not if they anticipate 2.8 in Q1 again like they did last year.

The Entertainment & Devices Division posted revenue of $4.24 billion, an increase of 15% from the prior period. The Xbox 360 installed base now totals approximately 66 million consoles and 18 million Kinect sensors. Xbox LIVE now has 40 million members worldwide, an increase of 33% from the prior year period.

Note emphazied.  In the verbal sections of a report companies can round and use approximate values - if you look at the detail that's where they state 65.8 shipped.
