Forums - Gaming - Nextbox and PS4 to be announced at E3?

This is a dangerous move, especially for Sony with the Vita recently released. I just hope that the PSFourth releases with GOW4, Uncharted 4, LBP, Gran Turismo 6, Killzone 4, etc. right away from release or close to it.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

If they´re launching sometime next year, it makes sense they´ll be shown in some form this year.

Remember the PS3 and Wii had their first details revealed at E3 2005, then were released November 2006..I can see the same thing here...first details at this year´s E3...then a complete reveal (launch date, price, games, etc.) at next year´s E3, then the launch around October/November 2013.

One thing I don´t understand is, if a new console is coming out in the last quarter of a certain year, why do gaming companies feel the need to confirm or show a console in action 1+ year before it comes out.

I have a hard time understanding why Nintendo (or any other company) confirmed and showed the WiiU so early (and out of the big 3, the "damage" they did on the Wii is reduced because their target audience is mainly casual), it makes no sense because you don´t show almost anything, the rumours and speculations can "kill" the hype, and in the end it will sell what it has to sell regardless of how early they start showing it.

I am not talking about show today and release tomorrow, but for example, why would Microsoft/Sony confirm/show anything in this year E3 if the console comes out in the fall of 2013 (for example), effecting current gen sales in a crucial time of the year?

You want to create the hype, but minimize the effect it has on the current sales, specially when current sales are growing every year, and you still have Holiday season in between, why not start hyping the machine in the beginning of 2013? Is the effect of showing it that early that big?

It would be very Microsoft-esque to show the console at E3 2013 and release the console fall 2013, that way they don't lose sales on 360 and the new console is out while there's still hype for it (the Wii U's hype has died down completely since E3 as it isn't coming out for another year).

But this time around MS don't really have a choice I guess, they want to atleast show off that they are making a new console so that the hardcore gamers that have a 360 and are prospective 720 buyers don't move over to Nintendo for the next console. As long as MS show that they have something in the works, their loyal fans will just wait it out, which is how I think. Its either that or they release the nextbox fall 2012 alongside the Wii U and give Nintendo a real run for their money on both the hardcore and casual front. Who knows?

I don't really understand how Sony is operating, maybe they are just going crazy after taking loses for so many consecutive years that they just want to be relevant in the competition with an early release. I imagine they don't want to repeat the same mistakes they made this gen.

Trust me, they won't be ...

Based on past system releases, at best you could hope for 1 at launch, 1 for the following holiday season, and the rest in the second or third year of the system's life.

BTW next gen doesn't start until Sony says so

I love Sony

I guess this will be huge with all three showing games for next gen at the same time.

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

I'm ready for the next round of consoles now so this would be great. The Wii needs replacing and we obviously know that that is incoming, but I've lately grown tired of my PS3 as well, so I'm ready to hear about a replacement for that.

superchunk, you still really think the "XB720" will be released this year?

Right now no one knows, of course, and you may end up being right, but something tells me that´s a bet you´ll lose.

I agree with the "all new consoles by 2013" part of your sig....WiiU around October/November this year, "XB720" sometime next year (perhaps earlier than Fall) and PS4 Fall 2013...that´s what I think.

What I´m really curious to see is what the "XB720" and PS4 controllers will look like....I think every "XB720" system will come with an improved Kinect, but the actual controller...what will it look like?.

As for the PS4 controller....a hybrid DualShock/Move?

But if Sony is to look back and reconsider how to launch a system after the rough start of the PS3, I guess they may even reconsider the launch lineup as well. Releasing all their firstparty games at the same time could be troublesome as well though. I just hope they unleash Gran Turismo 6 at launch, that's the heavy hitter.
