But you don't know what the wattage or the cost of a custom GPU chip.  Keep in mind that I said chip....because unlike what you might buy for your PC with a 7950 or 7970, for example, Consoles only use the chip....not the whole board.

I notice alot of people make the mistake of not understanding/distinguishing the difference

True, but its still not happening. THere has yet to be a single rumor... credible rumor that in any way points to either system being in the realm you want to see.

Are you kidding?

There have been multiple rumors about the PS4 using a TAHITI class GPU for the longest.  Considering how hard you've been into these inane rumors, I find it weird how you of all people could have missed them.

PS4 Rumors , APU code named 'Liverpool' Radeon HD 7970 GPU Steamroller CPU 16GB Flash

Just throw PS4 TAhiti, or PS4 7970 or PS4 7950 into google if you wanna see more.  I'm a member of the BEYOND3D forums, and they've been talking about it for months.

The 7XXX GPUs in an APU are actually 6XXX technology. Since you're using gaf you should also know that the smart people there also say it won't be over 2TF. In fact the 1.3TF neXtBox rumor and theoretical max PS4 at 1.8TF was accepted as acceptable.

VLIW4, like in 69xx.

As for that PS4 GFLOPS number, it would be 1152 shader card, which is something between 7850 and 7870. Considering 7970m (downclocked 7870) has TDP of 75-90W, I'd say it's plausible choice.

Funny thing though is that that exact shaders number was in some rumours for NextBox too...

Both console will be close in architecture this time... similar GPU and CPU.

My bet is a custom A10-Steamroller with some GPU 88xx.

Same rumors again... both consoles AMD CPU + GPU.

Eurogamer this time.

Yes @superchunk the graphical leap will be huge this time.

How do you figure?

The rumors are showing APUs with mobile/lower end laptop components. Not even current high-end PC stuff.

Will there be gain? of course. But its not going to be "huge". It will be far less than PS2 to PS3 or Xbox to 360.

A good CPU (better than POWER for games) plus a APU dedicaded to some CPU tasks plus a GPU like HD 7970M? It's overkill... the gain over last gen is equal or better than the PS2 - PS3.

Funny that medias keep guessing wrong about 720's RAM type

I think if that rumour is true (7850-7870) performance, that is quite decent GPU inside, and in line with what most people reasonably expected (not underpowered, not overpowered/too pricey). What I'm now mostly interested is to see if AMD managed to make them fully HSA capable APU ahead of their roadmap, which would be really nice.
