If this is the case it is a very bad move on both Microsoft and Sony.
For Microsoft Nintendo will have a holiday season and around half a year to sell the console without any competitors even announced. Its true that scenario worked with 360 but 360 had no competitor when it got announced an PS3 was announced so fast afterwards its not funny. Holding off an unveiling half a year gives Nintendo a huge advantage.
Then lets asses Sony, no unveiling till 2014. Yah right Sony is going to let Nintendo control 2012, Microsoft 2013 and then try to control 2014? Original rumors from sources within Sony said months ago that PS4 would be officially out within 18-months. This makes a March 2013 release date. That would make sense with Sony's other release dates. PSP and PSVita both launched and will launch around March (North America)
Also we didn't hear about Nintendo's games being in development that far in advance to WiiU's announcement. Microsoft started hiring developers to work on Next Generation software in 2008. That's right Microsoft posted a job opening at 343 looking for developers to work on a next generation Halo title. That job posting was made on August 21,2008.
Recently 343 told us at PAX that all three games 4,5,6 are in development. The story is being figured out and the games are in development. So considering they started hiring next generation developers in 2008. Its safe to assume Microsoft has been working on at least one next generation title for the last three years.
Considering dev kits are supposedly already in the hands of third parties, 2013/14 are extremely unlikely. Include the fact that now Sony's first parties are supposedly also in deep development and the actual genres and content information from Microsoft's internal games have already been leaked.
There is no way Microsoft nor Sony is waiting till E3 2013 to unveil their platforms. All the evidence points to a winter 2012 or early 2013 launch. Even if both consoles were released winter 2013, both companies have to show or unveil something at E3 2012. All the evidence points to a launch within one year (spanning from Winter 2012 to winter 2013) no later!
