Forums - General - Surfer hangs ten on Great White!

Well its back to those outrageous stories that are so out there that they aren't really believable. Another true story that really screws with your mind.

Doug Niblack is an avid surfer who was surfing off the Oregon coast. He decided to catch a couple waves before work and went out on his board. Little did he know he would be surfing the waves on something way cooler then a surf board. During one of his runs his board seemed to hit a rock or something slipping out from underneath him. He found himself riding the waves on something big and about 10 feet long. This thing had a fin and was thrashing like hell. It turned out to be the most feared predator in the ocean a great white shark. The surfer managed to remain standing on the shark for 3-4 seconds before falling into the water.

"It was pretty terrifying just seeing the shape emerge out of nothing and just being under me," he told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "And the fin coming out of the water. It was just like the movies."

Ralph Collier, president of the Shark Research Committee in Canoga Park, Calif., and director of the Global Shark Attack File in Princeton, New Jersey. Explains that this actually isn't as uncommon as you'd think people have accidentally rode sharks on several occasions. One such occasion a women was out Kayaking when her boat was struck and flipped over. The women landed on a great white shark which proceeded to give her a ride as it headed out to sea. The woman obviously let go and swam to shore.

Jake Marks, a Coast Guard member who was on patrol verified the story saying  "I have no reason to doubt there was a shark out there," said Marks. "With the damage to his board, the way he was yelling and trembling afterwards — there is no other explanation for that."The coast guard member said he saw Niblack standing on something that was churning water around him. After the man fell in the water the guard noticed that their was a huge silhouette beneath him. Marks followed Niblack the whole way into shore as he valiantly paddled for everything he was worth.

Niblack comments about what he thought and was doing when he had this extremely rare experience "I'm just screaming bloody murder," he said. "I'm just yelling, 'Shark!' I thought for sure I was gone." In the six years Niblack has been surfing he has never seen a shark so close before and never thought he would actually surf one!
