I think there is something underlying here. Could be cover up for a different reason of the delay. They may have chosen this route to intentionally put themselves in a good light with consumers.

Trying to turn Steve Jobs death into a Michael Jackson style publicity stunt freak show. Big Corporations only care about maximising profits, increasing share prices generate increase return for share holders and the consumers pay the high prices for goods they are lead to believe will enhance their lives.

My understanding is that this is just a delay of the ANNOUNCEMENT/REVEAL, not the actual device. IMO, that gels with what the reason they stated.

BUT if the actual product is delayed, that reason doesn't make sense and comes off as disingenuous.

According to internal Verizon docs... release date is still Nov7. I bet we see the reveal by next week at the latest.

The reveal was supposed to be today, however they delayed that reveal to an unspecified date. However, the launch date was not delayed and sources still state it will be Nov7.
