Forums - Sony - Warner Bros. Announces Exclusive Suport of Blue Ray.

Well of course most consumers would rather stay standard and keep or buy a DVD player.

Where as some consumers that have an HDTV would want the next format to take full advantage for their movies and HDTV.

You clearly skimmed the article I posted. It was not about most consumers, but HDTV owners, where it was of those owners that the support is just 11%.

I see, so the percent is low.

More clarification from Maxpower at BR.com:

I should have clarified. NL will make their own announcement when they see fit, they are still a fully autonomous studio, but the BDA have made a deal with Time Warner and you can rest assured that it includes all studios operating under TW.

Woot. Just imagine how beautiful Rivendell, Minas Tirith, and the Grey Havens will look on Blu-Ray. :D

Here is an interesting article...Warner insists it was not paid by Sony to go blu-ray exclusive...suppose it doesn't matter, but I've heard a lot of speculation about it.

Well, I now only have access to a PS3 & 360...Plan on buying a wii soon (lol, if I can ever find one available!) but will probably wait until some of the major RPG's come out like Dragon Quest & Tales, etc.

Anyhow, I'm so far behind in games to play that I'm not in a huge hurry (lol, haven't even gotten a chance to finish God of War II yet!)

I really don't see how this benefits consumers. I have invested in both formats so I wouldn't get screwed...

But, what is Warner saying to their fans who purchased HD DVD players only?

Also, I think this makes the war worse not better. It is going to be dig in time. If the studios that are on the HD DVD dig in, the war may never get resolved.

This generation of DVD stinks. And it is only getting worse not better.

By that measure, Warner never should have abandoned BetaMax, Digital Audio Tapes, minidiscs or DiVX.

Thanks to the PS3, BluRay has been outselling HD software by more than 2:1 for over a year, despite fire sale prices on Toshiba players. Either BluRay was going to win outright, or consumers would have to support both formats, a situation that has become increasingly untenable.

Of the major studios that are backing HD-DVD, two of them (Paramount, Dreamworks) were paid a fortune (and the Speilberg films such as CE3K, among Paramount's crown jewels, were always going to be released on BR) in order to go HDDVD exclusive. That contract runs out in a year, and then they'll happily go to the winning format. Among "major" studios, that leaves only Universal as HDDVD exclusive, and NewLine as format neutral, and truth be told, neither studio really can match Disney, Sony, Fox, Paramount or Warner Bros. I suppose that could leave a smattering of smaller distributers (like HBO and the Weinsteins) but they won't be able to keep the format alive.

I think this editorial (written by a retailer) does a great job explaining why keeping two formats is impractical: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/jeffkleist/editorial010108.html

They have to annouce the MOVIE RELEASES. This has NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT. What the hell makes you think being format neutral would affect the relase of Lord of the Rings in blu-ray? And don't bring up the Matrix, as this article states NL is autonomous.

So why the hell are you associating NL going blu-ray exclusive with LotR being released on blu-ray? If it's available internationally, BEFORE NL has annouced any decision, there is CLEARLY NO CONNECTION.

Now I'm typing in allcaps because you have been stupidly connecting the two, with NOTHING TO CONNECT THEM.

Most people don't give 2 craps about Bluray and only support it because they own PS3's and Sony screwed their gaming fans by forcing us to help them fight a freakin format war in order to play PlayStation 3 games...

I certainly don't give one crap (let alone two) about BluRay specifically, but I do care about having HD films, and am glad that this format war is finally at an end (really, it's been obvious for at least 6 months now) so I can open my wallet and finally buy a player.

We know this is bad for HD-DVD, but this is NOT AN END to this.

This has nothing to do with either format, or which will win. This has to do with the MASS STUPIDITY here.

I'm not sure this matters much. The studios are the ones who wanted to rush into HD in order to end the piracy problems that have plagued VHS and DVD. Now that the format war is settled and player costs are dropping dramatically (BluRay is down to $299, and likely will hit the $199 sweet spot for the '08 holiday), expect to see studio support for standard DVD to tail off. While they won't be able to force people to replace their existing DVDs, they are likely going to start forcing people who want The Dark Knight or Indy IV to do so on BluRay. In about 2-3 years, consumers are likely going to have a hard time finding standard DVD players and new DVD releases, so they ARE going to go BluRay, whether they want to or not.

You were insisting Sony doesn't do it at all, not just with here.
