In my case, the only beta that made me to preorder was killzone 2
recently i played Battelfield 3 beta which hasn't grabbed me yet ( i wanted to pre order this game but for now i think i want to see some reviews first) i really liked battelfield 2 multiplyaer but i don't know about this so i think i am gonna wait and see .
I have never pre-ordered a game because of a beta...I have however cancelled a pre-order for a game because of one.
i don't preorder but if i had preordered BF3 then yes i would have can'd it.
I don't understand why everyone seems to hate this beta so much. Any true battlefield fan knows that the game is nothing without its big open maps, destructable environments, and vehicle combat. EA just gave a small taste of what the game will be like with this beta while using it to iron out some bugs (which there seems like there are plenty of).
The tiny map of the beta has no vehicles, a very small play space, and barely any destruction. In many ways it is just like Call of Duty, and maybe it was EA's strategy to try to win over that crowd by showing people who play CoD exclusively that Battlefield gun combat is not all that different. This seems to have backfired on them (at least based on word of mouth I have heard) since most people seem to complain about the feel of the game / compare it to CoD. The strategy from the start should have been to show how different/better Battlefield is in comparision to CoD by bringing in the elements of the Battlefield series that make it unique (destruction, big maps, teamwork, vehicles ... all combined together).

Yeah their approach to BF3 marketing has been stupid.
I had my copies of BF3 pre ordered before the beta and they still are. However a buddy of mine originally wasnt to fond of the beta or the BF series. After a few days however he plans on going out to order it. He said its grown on him.
but I do agree the marketing for BF has been stupid...and i would believe the beta has hurt sales. Still if the beta does fix many issue that could have plagued the game release then it may be worth. Hell if EA was smart they'd launch a vid showing the same map and show all the bugs reported are fix and thank the beta community...i know...wishful thinking.
