While no future Gears of War games have officially been announced, Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski says he'd like any new instalments to sell on a par with shooter market leader Call of Duty.
Gears of War 3 shifted over three million copies in its first week on sale, cementing its position as "the biggest game of 2011", according to publisher Microsoft, but speaking to Develop, presumably just prior to its release, Bleszinski said he's not satisfied with the franchise's performance to date.
"We can do better. We can always do better," he said. "The number of gamers playing the game online - I'm hoping Gears of War 3 has more than Gears 1 or 2 ever did, especially considering how competitive the market is.
"You look at the numbers that Call of Duty and Halo pulls and we're not at that point yet. I'm hoping Gears of War 3 brings us closer to that point. People forgot also that we're only the third game of the series.
"There's been a couple more Halo's and a few more Call of Duty's so who knows, maybe we'll be able to build upon that success," Bleszinski added.
