Interesting theories on the flavor of the OP. I am aware of roles that would control someone else so mayhaps it will bear fruit. However, I read it all as fluff given "When people started coming to, no one seemed to recongnize themselves. There bodies and cloths were all wrong." It seemed to me like the power of the rod was already in affect on everyone in the form of an illusion.
