When a game is succesful there s only one question. Will there be a part 2. I believe this was the case with Bioshock.
Somethimes they start off with the first game in a trilogy. They basically skip the problem and make the first 3 games. Like Mass Effect, it could go wrong like in Too Human.
Some tactics:
Slowmover: Like Deus Ex every generation a new game.
Genre-leap: Resident Evil moving from survival-horror to action adventure
Shotgun-approach: Create a new game for every genre in the same universe (Mario).
Innergrowth: Adding zombies by Treyarch
Rename: Don't add numbers like Demon Souls/Dark Souls.
Edit:
Space Revamp: Like Fallout New Vegas moving to another city.
Time Revamp: A few years later or earlier.
Are there some more tactics?
