Forums - Politics - What can Las Vegas and Nevada do? Nevada leads America in unemployment.

Oh and it won't help employment, but this is one of the few states I would raise taxes. I'd raise the mining tax some.

Would that be to close budget deficits Nevada/Las Vegas is currently running, or to implement some other programs that are needed?

Primarily the first.

Only because i'm not even sure what could help Las Vegas in the long run.  The thing about Las Vegas is it's a city who is based around excess and sin... that's like, 3+ hours away from any other big city or really, even small cities or suburbs.

I'm not sure there is anything that can save Las Vegas.  It's all based on low paid employees in the tourist industry and then other low paying jobs that support them, with anyone with the money to improve themselves wanting to leave.

Other cities have this problem but they get away with it by renovating different suburbs and other areas to make them more desireable.

They tried building a suburb, but it didn't really seem to help much.

Unlike say Cleveland where I can live in cleveland and just get a job in any of the dozens of suburbs within a 45 minute drive.

Rises and falls in economies usually very among locations even in times or booms and recessions, problem with Las Vegas is... there aren't locations anywhere around.

Vegas was booming with new casino construction and more buisness so construction and service jobs were up... then the bust....

and it's just screwed.

Las Vegas, it is one of those places I really dislike, saw few years ago a documentation about water shortages in Las Vegas and the neighbourhood, to sum it up it was terrifying to see people closing their ranch because the lack of water for the fields/animals (probably becoming one those unemployed in the OP) etc.. All thx to Las Vegas who is demanding more and more water....Would make sense if it was all because of the growing population but mostly it is because of the need of water for the casino's fountains, stuff that is not really needed....Yeah Las Vegas disgust me.

While I hate Las Vegas...

To be fair, the population is growing pretty rapidly as well.

It grew 22% in the last 10 years... and like 85% the 10 years before that.
