Forums - Gaming - Is the attempt to become more cinematic causing AAA titles to devolve?

This gen has been the best for games, they are removing the slow parts that add nothing to the game and giving us 4-6 hours of action packed greatness.

Lets look at Half life 2, the game is around 8hours long and came out in 2004? HL2 is packed with slow scenes and bad driving parts that really slow the game down and add nothing to the product. Get rid of the nonsense and the game is 4hours of fun.

CoD could do the same thing with 20min walking/driving scenes every hour, then add 10min convos of them telling you nothing about whats going on. Not sure aboput you guys but i'd rather have 4-6 hours of fun then 8-12 hours of stupid bullshit.

There is a thing about games.  It is that they are PLAYED.  People play games and measure is how much enjoyment I got out of them.  If you want to then go, and compare them to other forms of entertainment, particularly controlled narrative, like movies or TV, would you then end up paying $60 to watch a story that ran 4-6 hours?  Would you also get into Call of Duty if it didn't have a multiplayer component to it?

I personally would rather have 40-50+ hours of solid and enjoyable gameplay, if I am going to pay what they are expecting, than for 4-6 hours.  You actually pay $60 for 4-6 hours of gameplay?

I prefer 12 hours of fun.

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

I think the fact that it looks pretty is how games get away with being called AAA while sucking ass.

I think that's why I'm so hooked on old Legend of Zelda games, platformers, and Kinect games right now. Current "cinematic" games have bored me to tears. I play a game like Shadows of the Damned and it gets rave reviews. I have to force myself to get my money's worth because it's nothing more than flash and style. Other than that, it's shallow as hell.

I go back and play old Metroids, Resident Evils, Super Marios, and Zeldas (or even current games like Little Big Planet or Tomb Raider Underworld) and I think, "This is what I miss." Games that actually require me to think, analyze, and become involved. Good puzzles and level design. These days, people are more than happy to see a pretty picture while they shoot the bad guy until he falls. They're happy to make so-called choices in so-called RPG's that are basically fetch quests and level up fests. Sometimes, that's what makes me happy. Lately, I find myself wanting more.
