Forums - Sony - Xperia Play spins original PlayStation One ISOs via emulator hack

source

Android developer Yifan Lu has reverse engineered the Xperia Play's native PlayStation emulator to make it run ripped PSX ISOs.

That means you're no longer limited to Crash Bandicoot or the handful of other PSX titles that have officially trickled out from Sony Ericsson.

Instead, you can grab your original games from the attic, rip them into disc images, and bring them back to life on your Play.

Er, assuming that's legal, of course. Perhaps you should move to Papua New Guinea before trying it.

We've attached one of Lu's videos to prove that his tweaked emulator actually works.

His custom ISO of choice? More Bandicoot.

Looks like you don't have to *rebuy your PS1 games.

It's probably only legally questionable to rip the disc image. Putting it on your own Xperia would be OK as would having the emulator software on your phone. It may be illegal for Lu to distribute the emulator software though. If Sony don't ban Lu from distributing the emulator then that's tacit approval for people to do the rest of what it takes to play the PS1 games. If I was Sony I'd do a deal with Lu and take a % of each sale of the emulator.

Sony mostly want to sell the phone and having this emulator only helps the sales potential of the phone.

i thought there was a ps1 emulator for android that is well known and even on the marketplace

nice

It's probably Sony's fault for not releasing most of their PS1 games for download, but this isn't quite a bad thing as PSP is enjoying some sales because of the ability to play PS1 games albeit formerly paid games or downloaded .
