Series 1 is generally not considered that great, but series 2 and 3 and to a lesser extent 4 are why I rate Blackadder as my favourite comedy.
Hugh Laurie had a couple of cameo apperances in series 2, but was a main character in 3 and 4.

He also appeared in an episode of "The Young Ones", another funny (and weird ) show.

Really!?
I haven't seen much of The Young Ones, but yes it was very weird (and violent) Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson made a few cameos on Blackadder too (actually only 1 cameo for Adrian I can think of)
