Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft “not dogmatic” about Kinect, won’t “force” it on core gamers

VG247

Microsoft’s Dennis Durkin says the company won’t try to force Kinect on core gamers.

“I don’t think we’re trying to put any input paradigm, enforce that on anyone, unless it’s better. We’re not trying to force anything,” the Xbox executive told IndustryGamers.

“If people want to do it and they think it enhances the experience, I think consumers will embrace it and they’ll do it, but that’s the bar that they’ll expect.”

Durkin commented that there will be plenty of “experimentation” with Kinect until developers find the kinds of experiences that really work to enhance games.

“I think one part of Kinect is making sure that Kinect is relevant for whatever audience you have. We certainly have a core audience. We want to make sure that Kinect experiences are great for them,” he said.

“We’re not dogmatic about, ‘Hey, no controller. It’s got to be 100% no controller.’ What you’re seeing is a lot of experimentation across that spectrum of, ‘Hey, here’s a totally controller based experience that’s been a controller based experience for 10 years, so people are very, very ingrained in how they interact in that experience,’ to, ‘Here’s the other end of the spectrum, which is a totally Kinect-based experience. You don’t need a controller.’

“I think what you’re seeing is a lot of those games which were firmly entrenched in this one category, which were controller only, are now experimenting.”

Well yeah unlike what many think MS aren't stupid. That's why they are keeping a lot of games only Kinect optional.

its true its not as if they announced mass effect 3, halo 4, ghost recon... etc with mandatory kinect controls they've always announced it as an option for existing franchises

yea wht o_O.Q said.

Exactly, people were running around after E3 trying to claim that MS was going to be Kinect only as a 1st party but I can pretty much guarantee you they have other 1st party stuff for next year besides Halo 4 that aren't dedicated Kinect experiences, even the new Fable game they said is only about 15% Kinect based while the rest is more traditional.

And Kinect is actually a blast if you give a try, some of the most fun I've had this entire gen so I'm all for more Kinect implementation as long as its high quality and well done.

Really? I have not heard this before.

i don't think he is talking about the fable the journey cause I'm almost certain it's a kinect game..... so no controller at all....

me I can't wait for TGS and see something on steel battalion..... give me some virtual reality glasses and kinect head and torso tracking :D
