Forums - Gaming - MS planning one OS for Xbox, PC, phone?

Eurogamer

Microsoft is planning to bring together its PC, console and smartphone platforms under a single unified operating system, according to a report from tech blog This Is My Next.

Its source claims that Microsoft intends to "harmonise" Windows PC, Windows Phone and the Xbox operating system within the next four years.

This Is My Next noted that that timeframe would align with the end of the Xbox 360′s reported 10-year life cycle and Windows 8′s mooted three-year run in 2015.

However, that date is at odds with other recent reports pointing to a 2013 launch for a new Xbox system.

The site's sources also indicate that Microsoft will ditch the Windows brand in favour of something completely new when it makes the shift.

It's certainly a radical concept, but comments made recently by the head of Microsoft's phone division, Andy Lees, add some credence to the claims.

Speaking at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference earlier this week, Lees discussed bringing all its various hardware form factors together under a "unified ecosystem".

"We're aiming to provide coherence and consistency across the PC, the phone and the TV, particularly with Xbox," he explained.

"That's through providing new types of scenarios. Things like the way in which we make the user experience more common - as you saw yesterday with the demo of the user experience you have on Windows 8, Windows Phone and also on Xbox - but also through sharing key pieces of technology."

Yes about time. I'm tired of buying games like earth worm Jim on 360 only to have to rebut them on windows phone

That sounds really awesome!

convergent interface in the form of the metro UI and shared services like Xbox live and APIs like Direct X yes
Convergent codebase I doubt it

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

This is how Microsoft take apples share in the phone market, and help them further with the games market. Pcs have over 90% of their market being MS platforms. Unifying that operating system with tv games and phones will breed familiarity on a huge scale. Something Apple and others just can't compete with.

But I like my drop down menus with expandable tabs with all the options right at my mouse pointer. I can't imagine doing serious photo / video editting with a metro UI.

Hopefully programs like Adobe photoshop and Pinnacle studio can keep using the old UI.

interface wise,good

utility wise,bad for PC's atleast

Ditch the 100s of billions of dollars worth Brand that is Windows? MS must be mad.

Anyways, i like my windows 7 setup, i would use it over mac os and even the version of linux i use at school. Tho the Xbox Live Universal PC-Console-Phone Subscription based service will be coming to supply games via digital distribution and most likely cloud as well and provide a platform to play them. My only problem i see is that the reason why xbox live appears to be a success because you have no other choice if you bought a xbox and want to play online but move to PC and you have a wide range of popular services like Steam that offer it for free.

So its going to be a tough sell for MS to get people to pay for the service to pay for games and play them.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

If they make it work it will be awesome.

good news for me if all windows phones are compatible with it when they make new phones.
