(Before i post this thread please note not to make any racist or stereotype like comments. The last thing i wanna do is to post this in people start flaming about why or why not it should happen. So be respectful and nice to each other please.)    :)

Ok now on to the topic at hand. So i was reading an article not to long ago about the main characters in all of video games. There was alot of games being listed (a little over 2000 to be exact) and i did alot of research on the most popular ones out right now. And i could not help but notice that many of these games had the same race and gender of main characters. White male usaully between 18-35 years in age saving the day/world from evil.(Excluding cartoon like characters like sonic and sly)

I did a little more research on how the video game industry is like according to race and gender and i found this shocking fact out. Roughly 80 percent of video game programmers are white males. About four percent of designers are Hispanic, and less than three percent are black. (source http://truthfullygeeking.com

Not only that but according to many gaming sites and articles i have read recently. Minority gamers are growing in size and are almost triple the amount now then it was 5 years ago.

As an Minority gamer myself i would love to see a little more diversty in the games i play these days. I mean i dont mind that most game developers use the same type of characters in there games. Infact many of my favorite games like God of War 3, Infamous, and Uncharted i thought was great to have those race of charaters in. But as time goes on and different people start getting into the gaming world i would like to see some of these developers become more open minded when they create there games.

So do yall think there should be more diversty in the games we play in todays world or not... Please explain why.  :)

(Here are a few games that have minority main characters this gen)   (Feel free to name some yourself if you want)

This is not a new phenomenon, just look at Hollywood. Your statement about most programmers being white is the main reason because the issue goes deeper because it relates to percentages of College graduates which is predominantly white. the issue is a lot bigger than game characters.

No.

They should make games exactly how they want to make them.

I've always wondered, what would you consider the characters in Final Fantasy to be? Not XIII specifically, but most in general. Are they Caucasian? Or are they Japanese? How do you make a distinction in race with that?

OT: I don't think it's too much of a problem... many people don't pay attention to the race of the character (unless it's stereotypical, like GTA:SA). But I wonder if this is part of the reason why first person games are so popular. Maybe since you only see the guy's arm/weapon, you can picture that person as being someone like you (unless of course the skin on the hands/arm is bare).

lol this reminds of journalists showing concern that starhawk's protagonist is a black man ( in terms of people being mature enough to embrace it ) :

"Graves is also interesting as a character because, in the realm of gaming, he's unique in one major way: he's black. I'm told it wasn't a conscious decision, but Emmett Graves represents a woefully tiny set of black protagonists in games. Add to this his character being tainted by Rift Energy (he survives with careful implants, usually it just mutates you into monsters known as Outcasts), and there's potential for themes about stigma and persecution potentially tossed into Starhawk. Personally, I think that sounds great and I think he's a great looking character, but I'm curious how fans will react when they're placed in the shoes of a minority. Will Graves speak to them? Will they even have the maturity to contemplate this instead of just spewing forth the typical vitriol of an Internet gaming message board?"

personally i think it would be great for more minorities to have roles as main characters but i doubt the trend will change... on a related note my favourite game on the ps2 had a black protagonist ( grand theft auto san andreas )

Not just the characters, we could use a lot more diversity in settings and story lines. We have over 2000 years of recorded history and folklore to choose from and about 200 countries in the world. Yet games always end up in the same places with roughly the same stories.
The same with science fiction and fantasy games, they're even more predictable then cod story lines.
More like grim fandango, ico and okami please.

Ezio from Assassin's Creed is tan :P
