Forums - Sony - PS3 troubleshooting

I didn't know a digital signal could be weak. It's either on of off, not somewhere in between. I guess you could have low voltage, a cable might be the problem here (more resistance) but you'd have to try a different cable to determine that. If all else fails, that's what a warranty is for.

It seems the mods need help with this forum.  I have zero tolerance for trolling, platform criticism (Rule 4), and poster bad-mouthing (Rule 3.4) and you will be reported.

Okay, reset system settings, and now it works on my TV with AV cables again.

HOWEVER, it does not work with through HDMI now. Does this mean the issue is the HDMI cable? It just seems odd that the problem would be the cable, since I only had issues when the PS3 was loading. If it were a cable-related issue, wouldn't it cut out at random times?

Or oculd it still be the TV? My TV is new too, so I don't like any of these things not working T_T

you just can switch back and forth between av and hdmi... you have to tell your ps3 what signal you are using ahead of time...

Looks like it WAS the HDMI cable guys. I went out, bought a new one, and voila, it works. Done.

Thanks a ton, everyone.

Good to hear you got it sorted, I love when problems have a simple solution, beats having to mail it off to Sony.

What's this about HDMI handshakes or whatever?

I'm wondering because connecting my PS3 to the 720p HDTV at our apartment worked for a while, but it apparently didn't work a few months ago when I came back from home. It's not the cable because it works at home on the 1080p TV.

What happens is when I switch it over to HDMI, the screen will go black like normal, but when I go to the HDMI input, it's just fuzz. I'm thinking that maybe the port on the TV is the problem, but I'm the only one that has something that uses HDMI.

Anyway yea, what was that you had to do? It'd be nice if HDMI worked because the TV is in a corner and I don't want to have to get around it all the time to connect the PS3 to my only set of component cables since I need them to connect to the TV in my room and I'd like to play PS3 games in HD.

The HDMI port has to recognize the TV that it's plugged into, and the PS3 does this automatically the first time you plug it in. You can force the PS3 to do this again if you hold down the power button for 5-10 seconds when you turn it on, and it will go to the display settings screen where it configures the maximum display settings (ie 720i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p).
