Now what should I do with it?
Which one did you get?
I'd start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/
Search for your phone, read a lot before tinkering so you know what you're doing and what to expect.
I rooted/modded so I can have a look/feel exactly the way I want it. I also wanted to de-bing my phone as well as remove all of Verizon's bloatware.
Now I have a great looking phone that is faster and cleaner than anything else. Wish manufacturers would just deliver everyone Nexus style phones. It would remove all the minor arguments people have when discussing Android vs otherOS's.

Ok I`ll def. check out that site. I got an LG Optimus One
As I said in another thread, buy the best battery you can.
Make sure it doesn't have a bad motivator.
And, with the obligatory Star Wars joke out of the way:
Hit the app store. You'll want:
-Opera Browser. It's faster than the default browser, even if it doesn't have as many features. When you're in a spot with low signal, you'll thank me for it. As an added bonus, if you watch porn, the Opera browser will actually save them (if you want) to your phone's gallery.
-TubeMate: This one is taken off of the market every now and then but right now, it's on. It lets you copy and save any video from youtube. You can even save music as MP3's. For whatever reason, Vevo videos won't play. so you're going to want.....
-Vevo. Music video app. good stuff.
-Vaulty. Got hot pics of ex-girlfriends, porn, or whatever and you don't want your girlfriend or any nosy person to find? Vaulty is your answer. The free version works great. For a dollar, it will become a working stock market app. Type in a stock and it will look it up. Type in your password and enjoy the boobies!!
-Movies: Powered by rotten tomatoes, you'll have your trailers, reviews, movie showtimes, box office reports, etc. in the palm of your hand. Only if you're a movie fan, though.
-Sound Hound (or Shazam): If there's a song playing and you don't know who it is, just hit the virtual button. Your phone will listen to the song and look it up. You'll have the artist, the lyrics, the album, the video, and whatever else you want to know about the song, instantly.
-Twitter: Nobody cares about your life. Nobody. But that doesn't stop me from posting every little mundane detail for anybody foolish enough to follow me and it shouldn't stop you, either!! When you're bored, and there's nobody to talk to, tweet. It makes you look cool.
-Adobe Flash Player: keep it updated so you can watch videos. It's always good to have.
-Ringdroid: Take any song on your phone and make it into a custom ring tone. You get the exact part of the song that you want. Simple to use, too.
-Urban Dictionary: What the hell did those kids just say? Act like you understood and then type it into the Urban Dictionary app. Then punch those kids in the throat. They just called you a racist slur and you didn't even know it!
-Wikidroid/Dictionary.com: Just like that, you have all of the knowledge the world has to offer. Amaze your friends with your sudden intellect.
-Advance App Killer: Too many apps running at once will sap your phone's battery like a battery sapping thingy. With App Killer, you can turn off all of those unused apps in a matter of seconds. Yeah, they'll turn themselves on again after a few minutes but it does make a difference.
-Juice Protector: Will actually optimize your phone and make the battery last longer. How? Magic, I guess.
Everything else will be your personal preference. Just go to the Android Market and look for the free apps. There's also a site I went to that allowed me to "jailbreak" my phone. Can't remember what it was, though. If you can find a good jailbreaking site, go for it. Free wireless tether is a hell of a convenience.
