On bungie.net they have a faq for it:

Should work for you aswell....
Just to the others user knows...
1: When connecting directly to the modem.
2: When a router is used.
3: When something is wrong.
Now to help you I need to know which connection you have: directly by modem or using a router?
Any answer you have to change the configuration (modem or router) to Open the NAT... for that you have to tell us what the brand/model of your router/modem.

Ok.
There are two methods to configure your router:
1) Enable uPnP (the PS3 open/close the ports automatically)
Look the video below after 3:10.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liOWS1z8Tk8
2) Configure the port forwarding one by one manually
Looks here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zta6YDLM4wI
The port you have to configure are:
TCP: 80, 443, 5223
UDP: 3478, 3479
That's just for PSN... some game require others ports too:
UDP: 3658 (Audio/Video chat)
UDP 3074 (Call of Duty 3)
TCP 3074 (Call of Duty 3)
UDP 3659 (MotorStorm)
UDP 3660 (MotorStorm)
I like the first option... works fine to me but in certain networks uPnP does not work then you have to go through Port Forwarding.
PS. When you made the PS3's Network Test what more was showed? uPnP ok or not ok?

so this will make my router less strict and change my router from a type 3 to a type 2 or 1?

You can't change the type... the type is just how your network is configured (1: Modem; 2: Router; 3: Error).
Your router has a Firewall to block all trafic between you and the internet... so you have to open the ports to PS3 works, or use DMZ, or enable uPnP.
