Forums - General - Mexico Drug War: Your Thoughts?

U.S. lawmakers are now calling for tougher firearms regulations after a report showed that more than 70% of Mexico's drug cartel weapons come from the United States. Violence associated with drug cartels has been a growing problem in Mexico, resulting in thousands of deaths. One of the more prominent ones was that of Mexican police chief, Martin Castro. His head was delivered to his colleagues in an ice box with a message from a powerful drug cartel in the region.  In today's Gotta Watch, we feature some of our more compelling stories highlighting the continued violence stemming from drug cartels in Mexico.

Mexico's 'bravest woman' - When 20-year-old Marisol Valles Garcia became police chief in one the deadliest parts of the world, she was dubbed the “bravest woman in all of Mexico.” Her predecessor had been beheaded, and it was a job no one was willing to take. Now, she’s left the only place she knows – a place where beheadings, shootings and gangland killings have become commonplace.

Teacher hailed as hero - This amateur video says it all.  It was shot by a kindergarten teacher who got her students singing songs to distract them while suspected cartel members exchanged fire right outside the school. What's the most shocking about this video is that it took place in city once known for being the safest in Mexico.

What are your thoughts? How does Mexico end this war, or will it ever end? Even with U.S being it's neighbor it's not recieving the hep it needs.

the UMS gets lots of help from the USA. it just happens that the cartels get a lot of help from within the USA as well.

sure...if the USA wasnt so involved in other parts of the world they could annex your country impose martial law and shoot everyone they suspect of being part of a cartel... then mexico could get the help it really needs...but idk if that solution interests you any more than letting the cartels have their way.

offtopic:  and with a border like this

they probably wouldnt have much trouble securing it from illegal immigrants.

Outlawing guns only keep guns away from law abiding citizens that needed the guns more for self defense. Who's the law protecting?

I do not think many would agree with me but here is how I would solve the problem.

1.Legalize all drugs for recreational use in the United States for adults over 18 or 21 (not sure on age yet).
2.Start a campaign for actual education on drugs instead of these FUD campaigns we have now.
3.Increase the punishment for driving under the influence.
4.Make drug test mandatory for anyone on welfare, and if you fail you get no welfare.
5. Go to war with the Mexican cartels-free the Mexican citizens from their tyranny.
6. Establish a plan to divide Mexico into states and incorporate them into the US as they reach our standard of living.

No one I have met really agrees with me on legalizing all drugs. I do agree in the begining it will be hard as people learn how to use drugs in acceptable ways and amounts, but after that happens their use should not be as bad as people will see that drugs are the cause of some problems and not the fact they are illegal. People will learn to use them with in reason, or they will probably die. It will also help to standardize dosing so to avoid overdoseing. It would also mean more pure drugs with less chance of other harmful chemicals being added in with out the end user knowing.

I myself do not use hard drugs, only marijuana.

The only real solution is to simply legalize drugs. Yes, even hard drugs. Legalising drugs does not mean that they are harmless. They're not, in fact many of them are very very dangerous and people should simply never even try any drugs. But that doesn't mean that it's best to make them illegal. Becaus In practice, prohibiting drugs creates much more problems than it solves. The alcohol prohibition in the USA is a great example of what happens when you make a drug illegal.

De-criminalizing only the possession of small amounts of drugs (like some European countries do) does not solve problems like drug wars etc. though. To get rid of drug crimes, the production of drugs must be legalized as well. The reason that we have no "alcohol wars" is that even the production of alcohol is legalized.

I agree with you and I don't do drugs, not even cig.

Legalize prostitution, too. And tax everything.

Yea. Its so stupid that prostitution is illegal too. Would be a much safer world STD wise if prostitution was legal.

i guess some in this thread have never met a crackhead.

Don't worry most educated people realize that prohibition doesn't work.  People will always demand drugs and arresting users doesn't solve shit.  Arresting drug dealers doesn't solve anything either because there is money to be made and someone will always fill the void.  I blame scare tactics by the stupid politicians.  The scare tactics scare the average stupid American into thinking prohibition is the best idea.  Only idiots can say that keeping on the same path will eventually stop the drug trade.  Lets just use one example: Netherlands.  Drug use there by the local population is actually far less than USA (especially when compared to teen use).  It is a never ending war just like the war on terror.  Lets just spend countless billions/trillions on a stupid war.  Sounds like the American way.
