Firstly, in moderation, it does nothing at all. Secondly, in large amounts, it hurts you, and you only. The USA has no nationalised healthcare, so there's not even that excuse.

Alcohol is different. That can damage society. It's also significantly more harmful than a fair few illegal drugs. Cigarettes are intended to kill the customer, so taxing those is fine. Unhealthy food is nothing like either of those two.

a healthy citizen is a productive citizen

a slight increase in price and lower price of the healthier food helps lower income earners to keep it in moderation.

do you know why fat parents tend to have fat children?  because they are slobs that pass those habits on to their children thus their fatness has harmed another person.  and im not from the united states so i most definitely can use my countries health care system as a reason.

i was just watching a show about a british man whos very obese and the UK government pays for workers to come in and take care of him all day long( on top of paying for his all food and lodgings).  i enjoyed when the one lady stated how the man eats better when they are there (for starters i dont see how he could eat when they arent there because he cant move) and in the background the man is making a sandwhich out of potato chips(not fries, the flat crunchy ones) which the lady obviously handed him the items so he could construct it.   the workers have to also bathe the man 5 times a day, which can take up to an hour, to maintain his health.  sounded like it costs quite a lot.

our countries tend to look after those not able to look after themselves.  be they mentally/physically handicapped or just disgustingly stupid and lazy.    whats wrong with some preventative measures to keep the population healthy rather than just paying for it out the ass when they inevitably require it.
