Forums - Gaming - GRIN blames Square for its demise

Remember GRIN?? Yup, the company behind the lame Bionic Comando revival and the rushed Terminator Salvation, well seems like the reason of why they disapear wasn't the bad games, but instead bad relations:

Speaking in an interview with Aftonbladet, Ulf and Bo Andersson said Square not only made ridiculous demands of the firm, but it also reneged on $20 million contract for the firm’s Final Fantasy spin-off game, codenamed Fortress. Square also insisted, according to the Anderssons, that the firm fax it the game’s code and music files.

“It is as silly as it sounds,” said Bo Andersson. “It is an impossible requirement, you can not send ASCII or binary codes on the fax. It is backward. Really retarded. It was almost a criminal activity.”

According to the developers, Square also claimed the firm was not delivering its work to the correct departments. It should have, instead, been sending all its work to Square’s legal division, and furthermore insisted it didn’t like the game’s Nordic style, which it specifically requested from the beginning and was one of the main reasons it chose a Swedish firm in the first place.

So, to test the waters at Square a bit, and to see if it was even paying attention, GRIN sent it some concept art from taken straight from Final Fantasy XII .

The Anderssons were told: “It does not look like Final Fantasy.”

I completely blame that on Square; they're the ones who screwed up and meddled with the dev team making it

Still deserving of the title Final Fantasy XII though. Excellent game if I must say so.

????? that was only the story.... it had nothing to do with the decided art style, game design

I've heard from people that what Square did to Grin was really bad. i think that fair enough that they wanted to cancel the contract - but at least compensate them for the work they've done. so i'm not sure what happened, but it was really wrong what SE did. Grin might not have been a top studio but at least they seemed to be doing there best.

and the artwork seemed consistant with FF12 and other FF games imo, the environment locations seemed similar so i'm not sure what the complains were about.

from what i've read it seems plausable that Sqaure didnt want to spend capital on the project because of their financial concerns at the time - i think FF13's development costs were building up at that point from the move to PS3 from PS2.

so they already decided before communicating with Grin to terminate the contract. its a shame because Grin seemed to think they could do something revolutionary with the foundation they were given. and a poor quality spin off wouldnt have hurt the reputation of the main series - well not anymore than Dirge of Cerberus, X-2 have.

I don't know about Terminator but Bionic Commando wasn't that bad.  I enjoyed it a lot.

You can fax music files? :P

And Final Fantasy XII doesn't look like Final Fantasy to Square-Enix? :P

I really didn't care about this Final Fantasy because it sort of looked like a generic WRPG to me so I don't care if it's cancelled or not... but Square-Enix's requests were kind of funny xD

Yeah, I agree, and Terminator was infamous for it's extremely easy platinum trophy. Honestly Terminator wasn't that bad of a game, except that it was 3 hours long and had nothing extra. If it wasn't rushed and actually given a decent budget it could've been an amazing game. We also can't forget that Grin was behind the awesome Bionic Commando Rearmed so it's not like they only made terrible games.
