Forums - Gaming - Will future generations of game consoles be more identical or more diverse?

Let's start with the next generation of home consoles to come out, from Project Cafe, to the offerings of Microsoft and Sony.  As generations go on, towards the end of each generation, do you believe that the consoles will end up being more like what has been seen with the 360 and PS3 (HD Twins), or more like what you have with the Wii vs the 360 and PS3?

In short, do you believe feature differentiation will grow, or will it shrink, between the competing platforms, as future console generations hit?  I will tend to be of the belief that the differentiation will likely decrease, as the market becomes more competitive and the stakes are much larger, and third party seeks to develop across platforms.  Any differences in graphics to will get blurred also, as there appears to be less bang for the buck in terms of improved graphics.

I agree with you that the gap in graphics we saw in the last generation which the PS3 seems to still be trying to milk for every dime, will decrease and is no longer the selling point for consoles after the Playstation also released record loses this month.

But when you say that competition will stop diversity, I personally think it's the other way around, competition always seems to drive more diversity and differences, which genrally leads to companies like Nintendo comming up with consoles like the 3DS and WII. Both of which seem to have thrived on competition and used innovation to drive their niche in the industry.

My Knowledge of Project Cafe is fairly limited but if I remember correctly there were rumours of it being quite different, with screens in each of the controllers.. infact a bit like an old console that escapes my mind right now. (It was waaay before my time)

I personally feel that the main drive in the next generation and the main selling point will in be the online non-gaming aspect of each console, PS3 having Netflix kept it going and it's userbase strong in comparison to what seemed like an online domination by the 360 for quite a long time.

My best advice is get a good PC and just laugh in all the console gamers faces as they have to pay for online gaming and for their inferior graphics.

I am looking at the end of the generation and the features that would appear.  If a feature in hardware takes off THAT much (like motion control with the Wii) then the other consoles copy it, like you had with Kinect and Move.  Or the IDEA is attacked, with their own spin on them.  For example, assume that the Project Cafe console does come with a touch screen, and it is makes a difference, the next gen consoles from Sony, Microsoft, and whomever else enters the arena, will end up getting one of those to.
