Microsoft has become a very reactionary company over the past decade in a number of their enterprises, and it has shown in the market value of the company.  They almost had a defacto monopoly on the mobile phone market in the early 2000s, but they let that slip through their fingers by pursuing other, less lucrative up and coming markets instead (ie, video games).
