Forums - PC - Windows 8 release next year, Source claims it will "relaunch PC gaming"

whats new you ask? well we changed the number 7 to the number 8, it took us a few years to figure out the logistics but we're proud to be announcing that we arw now supporting the number 8.

jokes aside though, isnt pc gaming at its height right now? have pc game sales ever been as high as they are now?

Those saying it came so quickly...Windows 95 released in 1995, Windows 98 released in 1998, Windows ME and 2000 released in 2000, Windows XP released in 2001, Windows Vista in 2006, Windows 7 in 2009.  Excluding Vista, Microsoft has always released a new Windows product once every 1-3 years, and next year would mark the third year since the release of Windows 7.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

I don't really care that much for heavy PC gaming - I'm interested in seeing the successor to the best Windows yet imo!

@Baalzamon:

I also think it feels a bit too soon, but that's only cuz I don't wanna let go of my perfect Windows 7! :D

However, of those only 95 to 98 (3years), 98 to XP (3years), and XP to 7 (8 years) were worth upgrades.

XP was so long lived because it was good.

7 is also good and should have more minor upgrades vs entire new OS.

However, I understand why 8 is coming as MS needs to get into the tablet market and better connect its phones to tablets to PCs. It really just makes sense.

My prediction.  The next Xbox console will be running a modified/streamlined Win 8 operating system so that PC games and Xbox games will be one and the same.

MS is all about convergence, Xbox live will be on the next console, your phone and Win 8.

Ok, the PC gaming* part is kinda rediculous, but Windows 8 is coming out...SWEET!

Honestly though, why when Windows 7 treats me perfectly should I upgrade to Windows 8?

For many of the features that are still missing in windows that it's competitors have had for years. I know windows 7 is a huge step up from Vista in terms of useability and from xp in terms of features, but to claim perfection is just silly. You and a few others in this thread honestly think there's no way Windows 7 could be better, or treat you better?

How about include a proper search function, as seen in Macs or Google desktop.

How about support for multiple virtual desktops, so I don't have to again turn to a 3rd party.

How about improved networking functionality. God help you if you want to share a folder other than my doucments/pictures/movies/audio, and it's laughable that it is easier to network an xp machine to a mac than it is a W7 machine.

I am confident that Windows 8 will include these features, as well as many others besides what I could think of in a minute, and once you start using them, they will change your life.

Ok, while your specific things don't really apply, I will agree that Windows could defiantly go for an upgrade that makes certain user functions more simplistic.

Windows 8 will be mainly for Tablets and PC gaming umm What could this be. cloud base? because games for windows lives sucks and will always suck as long as steam is still around.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

I wonder if Microsoft will try and buy steam, that would bring everything full circle. In a nightmare kind of way.

Saying that it would be kind of cool to have 100% steam intergration into the OS, as long as you could easily stop the autoupdating for 3g connections.
