For me it will! If they don't get all of the big 3rd party ports it would be a shame, but it still wouldn't stop me from getting it to play Nintendo games. I could always get whatever Sony or Microsoft bring to the table next gen in addition to Cafe'.

This is the most sensible and reasonable attitude. The most obvious and logical one as well. Especially when Project Café hasn't even been introduced and some are already giving it the victory. That's a special kind of premature ejaculation.

I`m more of a Mario kart fan myself. I never got into the Smash Bros gameplay - and i played them all. Brawl for me was the best. I even bought it but in the end the gameplay just wasn`t my thing. But if the new - unnounced one - is as good then it will really sell a lot again!
I honestly don`t think Cafe will have all the games MS and Sony will have. Actually that depends on a lot of things like how long will MS and Sony wait to release a new console and another being, just like the OP mentions, how powerfull will their new consoles be.
If they are just a little more powerfull, better for Cafe as it won`t look outdated. If more powerfull, i think core gamers will tend to overlook it aswell as developers.
Still, i think this time MS and Sony will only release enhanced consoles instead of new shining hardware: saves them more money and developers' aswell.
I doubt Nintendo, MS and Sony want budgets for games to be higher for their consoles. You can only get so much return is games.
If Nintendo gets left behind... i`ll have to buy another console next generation... again! But i doubt this time will be that bad as it was with the Wii.

Sony is probably planning for that already even if this is a hoax just because of the possibility.

It's true, oftentimes perception is harder to change then reality. The public perception (at least among core and dudebro gamers) is that Nintendo offers little in the way of games designed towards them. The reality was almost the same with the Wii frankly because they didn't get ports. For the GameCube it was only partially true. If the reality is that the Cafe will be home to major ports of the other two consoles (a likely scenario IMO) but the perception doesn't change for them, It will be another generation where core gamers dog the Cafe' just like GameCube of old based on false assumptions.
Luckily for Nintendo fans, we are usually pretty good at sifting throught the bs and enjoying all of those 3rd party games (that dudebros don't even know exist on the machine) in addition to NIntendo's fantastic first pary offerings. Nintendo gamers likely won't lose either way. Frankly I just love games regardless of platform, but my heart will always be with Nintendo.

Wii was almost a trainwreck when it came to ports. A lot worse than GC, that`s a fact. Still, as you say, perceptions are hard to change, especially amongst core gamers. Non-gamers and casual gamers aren`t that susceptible to perceptions. If they like it, they will buy it.
But that perception towards Nintendo is something that Nintendo could have tried to fix a bit by asking 2nd parties and their own internal developers, to develop more core oriented games like Halo, Uncharted, Gears of War and Resistance.
If we can get more good, meaninful 3rd party ports and still have Nintendo`s own games, those who have Cafe will have the best of two worlds! :D
About ports in general, if a) Cafe stays alone on the market long enough for developers to try the machine with good games and b)MS and Sony bring consoles that aren`t that better than Cafe (like GC;PS2 and Xbox), there`s a good chance that even the core gamers will end up being attracted at least to the good 3rd party games and maybe then, Nintendo really has a chance of changing mentalities and perceptions.
If MS and Sony release a new console right after Cafe or if they are different in power, Nintendo will really struggle to change the tides. Thankfully, even if that happens, Nintendo has the casual market on their side to keep them from going GC`s way!

There are countless devices which allow you access to facebook, with almost no services that interact with it directly ... When you can view someone's "gamerscore" or game recommendations, chat with them while playing a game, invite them to play with you, and countless other potential interactions I can’t think of at the moment I will say that facebook has been integrated with a videogame console. The broader point was, who says that "disruption" has to be driven by disruptive hardware; why can't the services provided by the console be disruptive? There are lots of questions that you can ask about the conventions of videogame consoles ... Why can't you play with your videogame system while someone is watching TV? Why can't your videogame system be used to augment your TV watching experience? Why are most videogames implicitly competitive? Why can't they be co-operative, communication based or creative? Why can't videogames be educational or inspirational? Why aren't videogames more social? Why is playing games by yourself (or potentially with people you've never met) an "ideal" experience?
... I could go on and on, but I don't get the feeling that you would see my point that a videogame system is more than the CPU and GPU that it contains; and people may favour a system with little regard for what its theoritical processing power is or how that compares to other systems on the market. |
huh, no, I feel I understand your point particularly this one : "my point that a videogame system is more than the CPU and GPU that it contains". And also this one "The broader point was, who says that "disruption" has to be driven by disruptive hardware; why can't the services provided by the console be disruptive?"
But I m not sure what you propose to bring will be that much "disruptive", that is all.
Time to Work !
