Will consumers pick a slightly more powerful Cafe for $300 almost without games or will they choose PS3 and 360 for $250 that have strong online features and hundreds of new and classic games to choose from?

Given that the Cafe may be $350-$400 (I'd go with $350), and the PS3 and 360 MAY be $199 around that time, that decision is going to be much easier holiday season of next year.

Just like it was an "easy decision" between a $99 PS2 and a $250 Wii?

They might not win in terms of sales but they will win in terms of profit.

Because vague unconfirmed rumours about hardware components and controllers can give an adequate understanding of the overall strategy of a system?

if in terms of profit you mean software sales, yes its gauranteed that they will because people buy nintendo consoles strictly for Nintendo games and its good for nintendo but bad for other publishers. Which is why 3rd party support has always been scarce on their consoles. This is the very reason why I havent bought a nintendo console since N64, which did have legendary games (OOT, MARIO64, GOLDENEYE) but I also missed out on legendary 3rd party games like the Final Fantasy series etc that was on playstation!!! >_____>

They also don't sell their systems for a loss.

The PS2 wasn't $99 when the Wii came out.  It only dropped to $99 in 2009, which is when the Wii dropped to $199.  I'm guessing it was probably ~$150 when the Wii launched.  Most importantly, though, the PS2 didn't have a motion controller similar to the Wii's.  If it did, I'm sure most wouldn't have felt the need to spend extra money on the Wii.

Well, just looked into it, the PS2 was $129 when the Wii launched ...

My point is actually made in your post though, how do you know that Nintendo's next generation system isn't offering something that the PS3 and XBox 360 don't have?

Well, if rumors are true, it will.  A touchscreen built into the controller.  However, I don't see that as being a huge selling point like motion gaming was.  Plus, who's to say that Sony won't have it where the NGP can be used as a controller for the PS3, and later, the PS4?  Not that I think that will be a big selling point for it, either.

Who knows whether the rumours will be true or not ...

The main point was that it is moronic to say that a system couldn't be successful when you know absolutely nothing about it. Even if the rumours are true, and it has a touch screen, with the people who said that motion controls on the Wii were pointless and the touch screen on the DS was a bad idea, I'm not willing to pass judgement on something like this until it has officially been demonstrated.
