Lionhead founder, Fable developer and walking incendiary quote generator Peter Molyneux has chipped in on the Kinect game debate, arguing that the peripheral needs more, and more diverse software support.
"I think there needs to be a broad range of experiences on them," he said, when asked about the future of motion-sensing devices by the Sydney Morning Herald. "I'm one of the great fans of the launch cycle of Kinect and now we need another wave of Kinect titles.
"We just need more stuff. I think we, as game creators, should always be instilling a sense of wonder in people. That's what we need to do at the moment - have these 'Oh My God' moments for people. I think games like Wii Sport did that. Kinect did that."
While core enthusiasm for Kinect has declined despite (or perhaps because of) rapturous mainstream responses, Molyneux remains upbeat about the peripheral's prospects.
"What excites me about it is that we are going to get totally fresh and different games that are not possible using controllers. If I was a betting man, I'd be pretty sure that in the next few years we're going to see stunning examples of things that we're just not able to do [on normal controllers]. Are [motion controls] here to stay? Yes."
Microsoft would certainly agree. According to product manager David Dennis, the firm will "triple" the size of its Kinect portfolio this year. Reports over at Eurogamersuggest that 10 "non-sequel" Kinect titles will be revealed at E3 next month.
The technology itself is going from strength to strength. Microsoft recently announced new AI techniques that will, it says, dramatically reduce Kinect latency. Kinect Sports developer Rare reckons it has only used 10-15 per cent of the device's potential.
