Could LA Noire's face scan tech lead to real actors playing videogame roles

Yes, and I dread it 3 9.09%

No, this will never catch on 3 9.09%

So with LA Noire the face scan tech esentially scans to create digital versions of actors in game that look like the real actor. So if this tech catches on could you see actors like Will Smith, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie etc in games. So imagine a world where multiple different games could have Will Smith in them just like movies.

I don't really see that happening.  Actors helping with facial expressions and very accurate gameplay, yes.  Actual celebrities being in games...why, when game characters are cool already?

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

There have already been games to do this, but to be honest it seems like a very limited/dead end tech.

there have been but this tech goes further than a likeness and possibly voice acting, this tech will actually let actors's actually act and have their performances in games which would make it much more atractive to real actors.

I could see publishers like EA and activision finding the prospect of having big name stars attached to games being very attractive. Just like movie studios demand big name actors in staring roles to help sell movies.

They do not need this face tech to do that though.

Agreed.  Besides, didn't Heavy Rain already do this, but with different tech?

I doubt there is room in the budget for adding actors to already high graoohic expensive games. Would be far cheaper to have no name actors do the movements and just use famous actors faces, but even that i do not see the point.

I know Heavenly Sword did it with excelent results, and probably enslaved too.

Now, Botan's face is not a perfect Andy Serkis, but he did act all the scenes himself as one can see here: http://www.serkis.com/heavenly/.

Andy Serkis also founded the mocap studio that they used, he is most well known for playing CGI charicters like Gollum and King kong so playing a game charicter isn't to much of a streach. The benefit of the facescan tech is that the scaning produces a "photo realistic" model that mimics the characters actual performance rather than just mapping the movement of traking dots onto a premade model. Both styles have their advantages but I think actors might prefer the face scan tech as it's get's their face out there.

I prefer mocap all in one. They want to go tooo far with this facescan, its just holding back real acting. In heavenly sword they made it beautiful, in Uncharted it is awesome, heavy rain is another great example.

in enslaved they also did a good job its just the developer sucked big time! ! ! !

Mocap is getting better everytime and the characters are getting more and more realistic so I dont see why they should let body-capturing left behind

The fotorealistic face thing is all good for the fotorealistic part of it, but I wouldn't want real faces in games. Where's the fun in that? since the medium of CG alows imagination to go wild, it should and will. We'll probably see both "real faces" or slightly alterred a la Heavy Rain, and "made up faces that look real" a la Heavenly Sword.
