The fighting sequel is in development for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 release in 2012, Namco Bandai announced at its "Step Up Dubai 2011" event in Dubai earlier today.

In a live blog from the event Famitsu.com reported that Namco Bandai reps debuted a trailer for the game, which is set 17 years after SCIV. More details were promised for this June's E3 event.

News of a new Soul Calibur isn't actually news at all, of course. Daishi Odashima, director of the new game, promised back in April that we'd get some details on a new Soul Calibur game in mid May. Late last year, he made first mention of the new project, as he Tweeted "SC is Back."

Separately, Namco Bandai opened a teaser countdown site back in April. This site will go live in about 10 hours from this story's publication and is expected to be the official site for Soul Calibur V.

Well I hope they make many changes and not be "The same" again. Soul Calibur 4 was just "Soul calibur 3" on steroids.

They made changes to SC4. That's why it was crap after good SC II and SC III.

As for changes they could start with network code from Blazblue or SF IV.

I feel the same. I used to really like Soul Calibur and SC2 but when I played SC4 it felt the same with better graphics. One thing I'd like to see is better blocking and parying animation along with more counters and combo breakers. It's like the fighters aren't affraid to be cut. Also reduce the boobs of the girls, seriously why so big... Ivy?

Hope this one has some decent modes .. like the map based storymode and perhaps the strategy mode from scIII... instead of the crap that sc4 had.

Hopefully, Star Wars characters will stay in a galaxy far, far away, this time.  Soul Blade/Soul Calibur was my hands down favorite fighting game franchise until SC4 (it just didn't feel fresh).  I hope SC5 can recapture the glory but is that possible after 5 similar games?  One can dream.

I hope they fix Ivy. I loved SC and SC2, but skipped SC3 and when I got SC4 Ivy was way too different to play! Changing so much the controls between games for my favourite character? Not okay.
