Forums - Gaming - Besides optimization to a platform, why care about exclusivity?

why else does it matter to me as a consumer? if there is a multyplayer element and I have friends who have multiple systems but only buy a copy for the system I don't have I can't play with that person.  While if it is only on one system and it is one that I have I can play online with them. So not a very large reason but something.

That's actually a damn good point.  It took me a long time to decide which version of Black Ops I wanted to buy--the 360 version so I could play with a few of my friends or the PS3 version so I could play with a lot of my co-workers.  If it were exclusive, I wouldn't have had to make a choice......but then one group wouldn't have the chance to play the game, at all.  Still a valid point you made, though.

Because it's cooler if its exclusive.

Didn't they dumb down the AI to put it on 360, I mean they were bragging about the AI until they annouced AC a multiplat and then they stopped and the AI was crappy when it came out...

I don't remember that and I think the AI in Assasssins Creed is about on the same level as any other sandbox game like inFamous, GTA4, Red Dead Redemption, and such.  If you could just link me to an article or something, I'd be glad to read it.

There's also the consolidation of userbase.  I know a guy I played Demon's Souls with that's getting Dark Souls on 360.  I guess all the fun times we had didn't matter.  Lame.  =/

Then there's games like Call of Duty.  The guys I know with Modern Warfare 2 are split pretty evenly across PC/PS3/360, so if I were to get the game, I'd be forced to choose which friends I'd prefer to play with, instead of just playing with them all.

It was written earlier most people don't own multiple consoles.  Would it be better that you couldn't even talk with your friends about the title, if it is multiplatform, if it is one, than not even be able to do this?

The only things exclusivity is actually good for are choosing which platform to buy if you don't want to buy all of them, and preventing us from having a situation where all consoles are identical in every way, which would be incredibly boring.

Outside of that it's just silly e-peen waving. People with one platform want to reassure themselves they made the best choice, and thus, the list wars were born...

Exclusivity matters only when there is a meaningful difference in the platforms a game is exclusive from. The Xbox 360 and PS3 do not have any meaningful differences for your stock standard analogue controller type games. They are called HD twins for a reason people...

Never heard anyone use that term before, ps3 obviously has a better library and people in the real world realize that and  thats why ps3 is selling the most

The PS3 is on the last place and never sold the most, I think your "real world" is an other one as all the other people share.

Never had the most sold, it's been selling the most for awhile, I'm talking weekly/yearly not lifetime

why do people need to reassure themselves that they made the "right" choice?? In the age of  insta-information one should be able to make a educated decesion on whay console they get without worrying about what the competition has and doesnt

I'd love to see every 3rd party game on every console because certain manufacturers simply build better quality hardware.   ... cough Nintendo cough ...

It was before the game was annouced as a multiplat so a really really long time ago and the AI is horrible in AC, trying to find a link but hard to find something that old here we go http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/p_assassinscreed_ps3x360

"With incredibly graceful animation, open-ended and extremely beautiful environments, advanced AI and the promise of slick combat, there's every reason to suggest that this could be another enormous success for Ubisoft."

that was a couple months before it was annouced multiplat, once it was no one who was part of the game praised the AI

You sure you're not just sick of only getting shovelware for the wii from 3rd parties
