90% of Canadians sound the exact same as 90% of people from the US. The only places in Canada that sound different is the east coast, the far north and Quebec. Even parts of the Uk sound pretty similar to canadian and US accents. |
Unsure of the statistics, but much of Eastern Canada does not sound as what they are typically portrayed/believed to be.
Take Rick Mercer for example, his accent is not dissimilar to the rest of Newfoundland excluding the very rural areas.
As an Asian linguist in the US military, I can tell you that Mandarin will not expand beyond China as a major world language. It DOES have a minor worldwide influence, but it will continue to be minor on a worldwide level.
The difference between French and Latin dominance compared to English is that the world was far from properly connected in their respective eras. The world is now fully connected and communication from one side of the world to the other is now instantaneous for essentially any given person in the world. As a result, linguistic trends aren't going to change much anymore. Put simply, once communication capabilities reach a certain point, the trends they set will continue going the same way. We're reached that point. English is now the dominant language of business and has been for a long time. It's not going to change anytime soon - the language is going to continue rising as the world's dominant second language and language of business.

The US army is become less relevant each year. China's tech and stockpile of weopon's means that you thinking you are in control is just another weakness...
