it was bound to happen; ou can't expect people not to be angry when identity theft is involved, especially when you waited nearly a week to tell ANYONE about it. if stuff like this happens, YOU HAVE TO TELL YOUR CUSTOMERS, no exceptions

It was not a week.

Sony said founded out that CC info COULD have been taken 2 days ago and warned people yesturday.

Really?  They knew that "external interference" had occured serious enough for them to 'take down' a service used by 70 million accounts.  They knew how serious it was much earlier.

Didn't xbox live get hacked before and they took down the whole service? I not sure myself I heard it form other sites.

Like i said this is common problem hard to sue a company that's not really at fault in this. Not like the people who sued MS for the RROD this is coursed by an outside problem not Sony.  Sites and Device(cellphones) get hacked all the time it's the sad state of the world wide web.

Sony Calls In FBI, Playstation Attack Biggest Breach In Data History

By David Richards | Wednesday | 27/04/2011

Sony has called in the FBI as well as European police forces to investigate the hack attack on their network which experts are now saying could be the biggest data breach in history.

Sony has admitted that hackers stole the names, birth dates and credit-card numbers for 77 million people who play online videogames through Sony's PlayStation network, in what could rank among the biggest data breaches in history. Authorities are concerned that the data could fall into the hands of criminals. There is also speculation that the data could be of value to a Sony competitor.

Sources at Sony in Europe have said that several police forces are now investigating the attack which has forced Sony to close their network for a week.

The PlayStation Network is used in Australia by Bravia TV and PS3 console owners to access movies and gaming content.

Sony said that an "illegal and unauthorised intrusion" between April 17 and April 19 resulted in the loss of a significant amount of personal information that could be used in identity theft. They warned users the intruders may have accessed billing addresses, purchase histories and account information for their children.

Sony are refusing to say whether they have been able to track which country the attack on their network took place in.

A spokeswoman for the San Francisco office of the FBI said that they will release information later in the week related to the Sony breach, but declined any further comment.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Thanks Grimes that is cool to know they're involved now. Now we'll see how anonymous they are when they get caught.

Sony cannnot just waive away its requirements to protect your data by using terms and conditions they will get slammed over this mark my words. The various information commissions of many different countries are already winding themselves up to protect this breach in data protection.

The idea behind having large fines and threats is so that companies make every effort to protect your personel data (AKA Data Protection styley). Yes the hackers are bad and of course they should be pursued but companies should also be fined and fined heavily, I am not saying we should put Sony out of business.

I can see various government bodies and federalised institutions such as the EU placing large punitive fines to ensure others get the message.
