Forums - Sony - Do you think Sony regrets going after George Hotz now?

why would they regret it? they have saved a lot of money on piracy had he continued and even gone on to hack the NGP.

They haven't saved a penny! If anything, they've brought more attention to the ability to hack PS3s and this is likely to lead to more piracy.

its pathetic when companies give up to hackers in fear of more damage. they need to be taught a lesson and sony is doing exactly that and with support from other companies, piracy can be a thing of the past.

It's pathetic when people bend over and accept unethical (or, in some cases, illegal) behaviour by companies and turn on the people who are defending their rights using more unorthodox methods (due to Sony's wealth and lobbying power, we can't expect the courts to do anything).

im glad their not intimidated by anonymous and have made them look like angry school children.

Really? It seems to be Sony that is suffering right now. It must be humilating to have their network brought down by angry schoolchildren.

in the end, their better off than if geo hot wasnt taken to court and jailbreak spead around the world costing them millions and losing 3rd party support as they did with PSP.

and piracy and legal and stopping it is illegal? since when?

I love how people on VGChartz make blatant strawmen of one's arguments and hope one doesn't notice. PROTIP: you're supposed to make strawmen of people's arguments when you're talking to third parties and they aren't present to defend themselves.

Jailbreak has already spread across the world. Once an exploit has been found, you can never stop people hacking your system. All Sony is doing now is bringing attention to it and making people angry, which leads to more jailbreaking.

I'm referring to their removal of OtherOS as illegal, seeing as it was completely illegal. Their removal of it was one of the factors that spurred hackers on.

I didn't say anything that any honest person could interpret as meaning piracy was legal.

@Kudistos

If you feel what Sony did was obviously illegal, then you should take them to court. I'm sure you would make a compelling argument.

Again, reading comprehension lets people down.

There's no "feeling" that what Sony did was illegal. It was illegal.

I also said that Sony has a lot of money and lobbying power, which means that taking them to court is likely to result in failure.

I can't afford to take Sony to court (nor would I have a case, since I bought a slim PS3), but I can buy an Xbox and stop buying Sony's products. So can everyone else. Sony seems to forget this.

should the US regret trying to wage a war on terrorism?   just because the fight is hard and the enemy is elusive doesn't mean the fight isn't worth fighting.

The US hasn't been fighting terrorism, they have been fighting Islamic countries and killing hundreds of thousands of people; and making the lives of millions more miserable. The whole "War on terrorism" does not exist; it is merely a marketing term to get fools to support the hundreds of billions of tax payer dollars being spent on weapons for wars against oil rich countries.

Sony hasn't done anything even remotely as evil as what the US government has been doing.

So if that's true why's China (our "allegedy" future enemy) getting a chunk of that oil. Another crack pot i hate politics cause of this. OK so you don't believe in islamic extremist?

islamic extremists exist for a reason ever heard of imperialism? the west is the reason they got power.

theyr the consequences of their actions. if the us fights for justice then they should let themselves get spanked by them.

Islamic extremist existed a long time before Western imperialism affected the Middle East. In fact, when Islamic extremism began, it was a Muslim empire that was oppressing Europeans.

Apple slapped same lawsuit against Geohut and lost but Sony does have a better case against Geohut then Apple did I still think Geohut would of won anyways.

I'm looking at Sony's point of view I think they're just trying to protect there product with this lawsuit i'm pretty sure no one wants to see the PS3 become the PC starving for new games. Anyways fair or not fair they have the rights to protect their product it's the court job to decide who's right and who's wrong sad it never got to that point.

Geohut shouldn't of talk big in interview, then flee the country and then encourage people to hack Sony should of treated this the same way he did against Apple.

@Rol

I know, I don't care. I was just proposing an explanation for why Sony did what they did.

No.  All companies should stand up for protecting their IP's which in turn feeds the families of those to worked hard on those IP's for a living.  Fact.
