Information regarding how to hack the PS3 should be able to be distributed, but anyone who has an hacked PS3 should not be able to connect to PSN.... this is just stupid, its like MS saying "ok you got an hacked 360, no xbox live for you and we're shutting your system down....Corporations > all"

why?

Because its not causing harm to others and freedom of knowledge is part of "pursuit of happiness".

so, if i hack your bank account and tell everyone else how to do it, that would be freedom of knowledge and pursuit of happyness too?

No, but if you hack your own bank account that is fine. Did you forget geohot owned the ps3 he hacked?

so, what you are saying if i hack my own account and tell everyone else how to hack the account at my bank that would be ok? nobody gets hurt, right, because i am sure everyone would only ever hack their own account!

You can tell them how to hack their own account. Thats what Geohot did. He did not tell people how to hack other people ps3's only how to hack their own.

You're dead wrong,  he told people how to hack EVERYONE and ANYONEs  bank account by manipulating his own bank account.

But besides that. I would stll say yes thats ok. I mean if we are allowed access to information on how to make bombs, why not hacking? Infact it may be legal already to tell people how to hack things. (Now theft is still illegal so they would of course get in trouble for that if they did do it)

You sir have written "i want piracy" in in signs that all can read from Rivendell to the mouths of Anduin.

Well that made no sense to me in any way. Sorry dont get the reference. Where did I say I endorse piracy? I do not believe I did. PLease point it out to me. I dont hack nor do I pirate. The only reason I care about this case is because it deals with corporations trying to keep ownership of what you buy, and in my book that is wrong. So you can either argue the points, or make vague refernces.

Really? So geohot can go and hack your ps3 right now? I can read his instructions and hack your ps3 with out your knowledge? I did not realise that.

Besides that even if he did, it is still illegal to damage other peoples property so the point is mute.

All he did was hack his own ps3. He did not pirate, he did not hack the PSN

This would be like if you worked for a bank and figured out how to open the safe.  Then you went around and told everyone the combination, address and location  to access the safe.  You, didn't access the safe or take any money but other people did (Using your instruction).

You don't believe there would be  consequences for these actions?  Or legal battles waged by the bank?  Even if it came out that you were innocent and allowed to distribute this information,  the bank would be combing for any wrong doing that you did that they could legally slap you for because you full-well understood the consequences of your actions.

Essentially Sony is going to do the same to Geohot to see if he benefitted financially, connected to the PSN (Another clear indication of his desired purpose),  or did anything else that could be construed as criminal.  The issue is not what he did to his PS3 in his own home, on his own terms.   The issue is what did he do after he cracked the PS3 (Or what he had to do during cracking the PS3 in order to crack it and what functions did he attempt on his cracked PS3).

We know he released the codes to the public (Strike One) (Not necessarily punishable by itself, yet easily could be linked into proving intent) ,   We don't know if he committed other offenses (Potentially Strike Two and Strike Three).

If he did commit Strike Two and Strike Three type offenses,  then he deserves what Sony is attempting to do to him because he broke the law and went beyond the 'Harmless Homebrew'.

You guys should google more. You can find instructoins on how to hack atms/bank accounts, make bombs, make guns, make knives, jailbreak the iphone/smart phones. But we draw the line at hacking your own ps3. Unless you all agree that the iphone/smartphone should not be jalbroken than you guys are just being a little hypocritical.

It's a way to hack any PS3.  He gave anyone the instructions on hacking any PS3.  Obviously,  I'm not concerned with him cracking 'my personal PS3'  but he gave everyone the ability to hack any bank account (PS3).   Not saying I could personally hack YOUR PS3 from a distance, but if I had the opportunity to have access to your PS3, I certainly could using his method.

Obviously, this is going to cause problems with the bank.    Especially because these bank account hacks cause other people to lose their money, reliability and safety of their bank account.

I don't see your point where this is an issue?  Since the only people who can hack their PS3's are still, the people who own their PS3s.  Or people who break into someone elses house.

In which case, they could just steal your PS3 rather then hack it.

I think this website would be enlightening to you.

It  is... quite literally, a blueprint to build a nueclear weapon.

Anyone could build their own atomic bomb, or modify anyone elses I suppose.

I guess if your going to take the extra steps to break into somebodies house and than take their ps3 and hack it, than yes he did. But I missed those parts in his instructions. Perhaps I should reread them.

How many Nukes have you built with that guide, since it is the tell all blueprint to crafting them?

The point is,  to build your own nuclear weapon you need a lot of resources at your disposal.  There is a reason not every country in the world has Nukes at their disposal.   Despite how easy you would think it is.  Instructions alone is probably the easiest part of the process.

The point where it's an issue is you have someone who has claimed not to do anything illegal while cracking the PS3 (Piracy, etc) , while simultaneously and obviously released codes to the rest of the internet (For his obvious intent) (to financially harm Sony via Piracy).   You're absolutely bat shit crazy if you don't think Sony  (Or the Bank we've been referring to)  is going to come after him legally and attempt anything they can find to bust him for something illegal.

Everyone seems to assume he is innocent because all he did is release the codes (If that's all he did, I have no doubt that he will win this case against Sony). However, I also believe that he took it further (I'm a realist).  I completely believe that there were definitely piracy motives (Especially after releasing the codes)  to his decision making and it wasn't just all earnest and honest 'jailbreaking'.

This is why and what Sony is going to attack him for.   People are missing the point if releasing the codes are illegal or not.  Sony is coming after him knowing the liklihood that there was a legitimate crime committed that he could be proven guilty on.

So do you want me to bring up blueprints to build a pipebomb?

I could, and that probably don't take more then a hardware store and $20.

Aside from which, Geohotz blocked piracy on his custom firmware.

As for his "ulterior motives".  This is the same guy who jailbroke the Iphone.  There were no ulterior piracy motives there.

What makes you think there are some here?  Outside, likely complete ignorance of the situation.
