Do you remember the Star Wars Kinect project that was unveiled during Microsoft’s E3 conference last year? If you don’t I don’t blame you seeing as how the demo wasn’t gameplay (see this example) and honestly the prospect of playing an on-rails Star Wars game doesn’t sound that enticing compared to flailing ones arms like a complete madman in the hopes of killing Stormtroopers and defeating the Empire.
Since somewhat dazzling gamers and leaving others completely jaded on the possibilities of the Kinect hardware, Star Wars Kinect has been hiding in a far off galaxy with no details coming in at all. The game is still under active development over at Terminal Reality (Ghostbusters) but both LucasArts and Microsoft are keeping their cards close to their chests for the time being, possibly waiting to blow us all away with the first proper reveal.
But someone out there has played Star Wars Kinect and supposedly it’s going to amaze all of us. Having portrayed one of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars franchise has its perks as actor Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) has seen and played Star Wars Kinect and he liked it. Taking to his Twitter account, Daniels wrote "I have played Star Wars Kinect. You haven't. You can't wait. I can't say anything more." The fact that the man who personified C-3PO played Star Wars Kinect and that he apparently digs it may not be shocking news, but at least it’s something for the few dozen hardcore Star Wars fans out there that have been anticipating the release of Star Wars Kinect.
Obviously we wouldn’t expect Anthony Daniels to say that Star Wars Kinect is complete poodoo unless he wants to be exiled from any future Star Wars projects, which is entirely possible as the fury of the pelican necked George Lucas has been felt by many including the body of Darth Vader himself: David Prowse. We may not have any exciting new details on Star Wars Kinect, but Daniels’ Twitter tease (which has since been deleted) concerning the project does at least show that it’s still likely on track to be unveiled at E3 this year and if Daniels has played the game then that means he’s probably in it as it’s customary to have some voice over talent to at least see what the hell they’re working on.
I don’t know if Star Wars Kinect will actually be a good game, but with the full marketing might of Microsoft and LucasArts behind the project and the general fandom there is for Star Wars, the game will likely become one of the biggest releases this Holiday season.
Stay tuned for more info on Star Wars Kinect leading up to the E3 2011 reveal. And yes, I will play the game at E3 this year if it's possible and risk looking like an ass in public if it means I can get some hands-on time with Star Wars Kinect. I’m willing to do whatever is possible in order to give you fine folks the complete lowdown.
