Ever since I was a baby their is one country I have had a severe passion for, that country is Japan. I have hosted 21 Japanese exchange students in my lifetime. I love everything Japanese, I am hoping to one day go on a longer term missions trip to Japan. But main thing is I have always wanted to visit Japan.

Well I will finally get the chance, but it sucks. On my way home from a missions trip to Thailand we will have a one to two hour lay over in Tokyo. During this time I was told we will be in the airport, I asked my team leader if their was anything we could do in Japan and she said we would be boarding our connecting flight to Canada. She said we would be going straight from one gate to the other.

She said we won't even have much time to even see the gift shops or anything, we will need to catch our flight home.

So my big dream to visit Japan and I'll only be able to look out the window or if I'm really lucky see a gift shop before leaving. Dang I hope this isn't the only time I'll ever get to see Japan.

I was joking with my mom that I would purposely miss my flight. But she said the church and my family would be pretty pissed if I disapeared on them. So it looks like I will only get a small glance at Tokyo!

Anyone else have a dream of visiting Japan, did you ever have a chance of carrying out that dream? Or are you Japanese dreaming of visiting Canada and thinking I am nutz?

Is that some sort of religious conversion thing?

JC could answer it a bit more exactly, but the answer is 'kinda'.

A missions trip primarily involves giving aid to people in a country that have a lack of it. For example, a lot of missions trips may be to help build an orphanage, or school, or take a group of doctors/nurses to a country that has a lack of medical care.

In addition to the aid, they try to share the message of Jesus with the people as well. Of course, they render aid/help regardless of belief, and will not discriminate against those that don't agree with them.

Most American churches support this kind of activity. The church I go to sponsors a local nurse to travel to Mozambique for 6 months out of the year to help with their medical care. They support 4 other missionaries, but that is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

In other words it's all a conversion ploy to prey on the poor people of third world countries.

Given that missions trips take place in most nations, even in developed countries, I would say no. Missions trips can happen anywhere and target anyone. I have friends that have done missions in your country by building schools and hospitals.

And your choice of language is pretty disheartening. Its not a ploy to prey on people, Sapphi. Just because you hate religion doesn't mean that everything we do always is to prey on people. Do we want people to come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior? Absolutely. But that doesn't mean that many Christians stop trying to help people if we know they aren't going to become Christian. I've seen a lot of wells dug, hospitals founded, and schools started in the name of this 'ploy' that helped a lot of people. I've seen hungry people fed, homeless people given a roof, and alcoholics/drug users helped with their addictions because of this 'ploy'.

I have to ask this, Sapphi, have you ever in your life helped out someone less fortunate? I'd really like to understand why you have hatred of those that do.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

With about 2 hours at the airport you won't really have much time to see anything. If at all you might have the chance to get into a bookstore/kiosk and maybe grab a videogame magazine or something.

Need something off Play-Asia? http://www.play-asia.com/

That's horrible! I mean, not going there would be bad, but this must feel so tantalizingly close!

And I've wanted to go to Japan ever since I learned that Pokemon was made there. Of course, I've since fallen in love with their culture, history and people, as well, making me really wanna go there. Hopefully, I'll go there on a family holiday at some point...

Better than having your semester there canceled, to be replaced by summer school

At least you'll actually be there.

Hopefully I'll be in the same proposition as this, but are you being self-taught or recieving formal teaching. Also do you need to be in a certain level of proficiency before you leave (I mean is there a criteria?).

I've discovered a decent alternative, a US State Dept (think Foreign Ministry) sponsored 2-month all-expenses-paid intensive language study that i'll look into for right after i graduate.
