Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Japanese games on American 3DS or vice versa?

I know that Nintendo says the games are region locked, but has anybody tried playing Japanese games on an American/European 3DS or vice versa? Maybe a gaming blog/site?

I think it was Joystiq who cut off the nob of a 3DS card to fit it into a normal DS, only to discover that it doesn't work. :/

But I haven't heard of anybody actually try to play a game from a different region. I'd like to know what kind of error message is displayed...

BTW: Stupid region lock!

Conegamer - I say that the PS3 will beat the DS next week in Japan  (for hardware sales) Forfeit is control over others avatar for 1 week.

If i were actually going to Japan this semester i would have tried that (USA 3DS displaced, after all)

Stupid, stupid, stupid catastrophe :<

The way Nintendo made it sound was as though it would be "non-optimal" to use one game in the other region, and not like it wouldn't work at all, so i'm also curious

Yes, I heard that, too, and that's why I'm wondering...

Thanks, ZaP!

That was exactly what I was looking for. And it's quite disappointing, too... :/

Yeah but that's a Nintendo 3DS game of course their games are gonna be region locked cause they're the ones trying to enforce it.

You have to check the third party games to see if they work in it. If they're smart they won't lock their games. I know plenty of people with japanese games for their Ds

Reviewers should subtract 10/100 from scores for region locked portable titles and 5/100 for home console titles. It's an unjustifiable crippling, totally unuseful, and, worse, damaging for the users, particularly for those of portables.

While I know the purpose of region codes are to keep the distribution chain in tact, they mainly serve to punish honest consumers that are legally buying their product.  This is one of the biggest turn offs of the 3DS.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

And damage their relationships with nice corporate people holding the keys to those huge marketing budgets?

Surely you jest? ;)
