Forums - Sony - Fiscal Year 2010 PS3/360 Gap Predictions

Sony will ship enough PS3's to beat their projections, they'll probably overship somewhat, but I doubt it'll be too much

360 should have a big shipment, VGChartz numbers were only 500K short of the shipment Microsoft had last quarter, so unless we have some seriously overtracked Xbox sales, then they should be shipping about an extra 500K 360's this quarter to replenish stock, so I expect to shipment gap to increase, but the actual gap to decrease

Oh, that will be a dark, scary day indeed.  The mass cry of overshipped/channel stuffing will be heard round the world...

Don't you mean the mass cry of "Now we'll catch the Wii!!" and "Xbox 3rd60", :P?

Slight increase in the gap.

Lol.  Ok, we'll here both.  Well, maybe not the "We'll catch the Wii!"  I think even the most devote PS fanboys know that's impossible now.

While MS may have had to ship an 500K, I would think that would really only make up for the shortages they had in Jan.  At the very most, MS and Sony would probably ship the same amount.

So, that's like over a year Sony has been overshipping?

Then again it is true that xbox shipments to japan are almost nonexistant. But ill stay with my estimate

Same applies to Sony...sort of. The Tsunami apparently destroyed 127k PS3s. Will these count? Does anyone ever count the PS3s that are bundled with the 3D TV bundles?  Will the world end if the shipped gap is less than 2m/more than 3m? Does anyone really care?

Does... ...anyone really... ...CARE?

And I suppose you'll be surprised to see the internet erupt in flames when the gap closes completely.

Said the guy who thinks the 3DS is the reincarnation of jesus :P.

i thought this thread is in sales discussion you know

I don't think they have been overshipping up to this point, but I do think they'd be williing to do it marginally to reach their forecasts

Well, I wasn't pointing you out, per se.  It's just that every financial report for the previous 4 or 5 quarters, there is always someone trying to say Sony has over shipped and stuffed the channels.  Usually the same people.  Of course, anyone with common sense would know that this is impossible to do for that long because stores are the ones who fill out the orders, not Sony.  Though, Sony can encourage stores to take more stock with price incentives, but only for one quarter or so.

So, if you think it is only for this quarter, it is possible.  But personally, I doubt Sony really needs to overship/stuff.  The PS3 is in pretty high demand in EMEAA and Japan compared to the other 2 home consoles, while not doing too shabby in America, either.

I know what you mean on people saying overshipping though, some people say that every financial report (and your right it IS the same people)

well that's the thing, because the PS3 is in high demand in EMEAA, there are lot of markets and a lot of shops, if they encouraged them every 10th shop to take an extra PS3 this quarter to meet the shipping goal it would really help out and because there is only one extra PS3 per 10th shop its very difficult to notice the change in stock (well that would be my guess, you'd probably have to use every 3rd shop in reality but still :P)
