No one truley knows where they all went to and its very likely some are still hidden inside of Shield Worlds similar to the one seen in Halo Wars and the one encountered by the Spartans 3's and Kurt known as Onyx. Also I think the Data Pads hidden in Halo Reach gives some glimpses into what may be brewing in the Halo Universe and its kinda scary. The Data pads are basically an exchange of discussions from an unknown group of AI's who refer to themselves as The Assembly. Basically these AI have been governing and influencing the human race for an unknown amount of time in order to fullfill their single purpose which is the preservation of humanity. They formed their Assembly in complete secrecy and the human race has no idea of their existance. They are directly responsible for huge events such as the creation of the Spartans and in fact they themselves reached out to the Covenant and revealed our existance to them in an effort to force humanity to evolve and deal with such a threat that way we would unify and not destroy ourselves as we had been doing in interplanatary civil war. |
Possibly. I would love to see them take it in a totally different direction though - Someone suggested the next game should be a century later, when the UNSC has recovered and absorbed lots of forerunner technology. I think just the opposite. Involve the forerunners, sure - but the next game should be against an opponent less intimidating than the covenant, technologically, but numerous. Moving forward any significant period of time, and there's no reason master chief needs to be the be-all hero of the day. But moving the timeline forward just a decade or two... possibly 3... and Earth is still rebuilding, in the early stages of recolonizing, and the new threat appears. Obviously the obscene expense it would take to recreate the Spartan project would be something for down the road, so MC would still be the lone super soldier. This also means humanity would be using it's fledgling fleet to repel these invaders, and once again Master Chief could make his present felt, where the UNSC's fleet cannot.
Just my 2 cents. Perhaps even making it the next challenge of the assembly to push humans toward unity once again, as colonies begin to fracture off from earth?
