Forums - Microsoft - Perfect Dark Core: Rare’s canceled mech-action prototype

VG247

It’s time for another regret-fuelled journey into what might have been, today starring Rare’s shelved Perfect Dark Core for the N64.

According to Unseen 64, Perfect Dark Core was in development by Chris Seavor’s Conker team, as most of the Perfect Dark team had moved on to other projects.

The project kicked off with a tougher, more flirty revamp of series protagonist Joanna Dark, subsequently replacing her with an unnamed male.

Later on, the game morphed into a mech-action FPS, before being canned without ever getting out of the prototype stage. All we have left are the videos embedded below, and a gallery of concept art available through the link above.

The N64′s critically and commercially successful Perfect Dark was followed by a Game Boy Colour spin off and the coolly received Xbox launch prequel, Perfect Dark Zero. The original has since been remade and released for Xbox Live Arcade.

Thanks, Joystiq.

Around the Network

Ah the days when Rare were kings. They were technically ahead of their time with animations to.

Their is no way this was a 64 prototype. Man it says right in your source it was a 360 title. I'm sad to see that Rare had such projects underway and Microsoft shut them down or the studio did. I would love to see more games by Rare and these projects could have had potential. Now Rare's art division is gone and the days of possible Rare master peices seem to have dissapeared with it!
