2011 should be Sonys best year in terms of exclusives. 2009 was also a good year (2 year development cycle). 2010 started off with a bang (GOW3 and Heavy Rain) but ended pretty badly, seeing LBP2 and Socom4 get pushed into 2011.
With that said, will 2012 be another down year for Sony exclusives? What could we potentially get in 2012?
- The Last Guardian. My gut feeling is that it will get pushed to Q1 2012. New IP and new engine that requires lots of work. Masterpieces take a lot of time and ICO Team has a lot of pressure to deliver another classic. They can't rush it.
- God of War 4 / GOW Spinoff - Santa Monica is working on something. While the Trilogy is done, the franchise is too popular to let go. I fully expect another GOW game in 2012. The last one came out March 2010, so if they release for Fall/Winter 2012 (Holiday season) that gives them 2.5 years of development time to pump out another epic game.
- MAG 2 ??? The first one sold over 1 million copies despite being a dissappointment in terms of critics and fan reviews. It's a whole different team than the one that makes Socom at Zipper. They have the engine intact and lots of time to refine it. I think MAG was a bit of an experiment to see if fans would enjoy a massive FPS online game. Will they deliver a sequel or start a new IP? Maybe they are working on Socom 5 and plan a yearly release like the CoD series. Who knows. But they must be hard at work on something that should be ready by next year.
- StarHawk / WarHawk sequel. Dylan Jobe is being obvious on his Twitter page that something will be revealed soon. I'm guessing by E3 we will have an announcement.
- GT 6 ??? I'll believe it when it's in stores. As I previously mentioned, games are mostly on a 2 year dev cycle. But Polyphony is not just any dev. They are perfectionists. And while its been stated that GT 6 would have a shorter dev cycle due to the engine being finished, it's hard to believe Polyphony after so many GT5 delays. I wouldn't count on GT 6 in 2012, but it could happen.
- AGENT. RockStar seems rather isolated when it comes to revealing stuff about their games. RDR and LA Noire werent shown much until right before they were set to release. The game was announced in 2009 and AFAIK Rockstar is contractually obligated to follow through with this game for PS3. They can't just scrap it. Considering we havent even seen a screen shot yet, I think it's safe to say AGENT isnt coming in 2011 and therefore should be coming sometime in 2012.
- Metal Gear Solid: _________. MGS is Kojima's baby. He seemed pretty bitter when MGS Rising was announced as he made a few comments saying it's not a real part of the MGS series, and its being handled by a different team, etc. I don't think he'll ever leave MGS alone. Heck, he already released MGS Peace Walker after MGS4 so it wasnt the end of Snake. He can always jump back in time and do a prequel (which he seems very fond of) or have a twist in the storyline.I have no doubt well see another MGS game, the only question is.... will it be PS3 exclusive again?I have to think so as story telling is very important to Kojima, as is quality. I don't see him dumbing MGS down to fit on an acceptable number of DVD's for 360.
Did I miss anything? Which PS3 exclusives do you think we'll see next year?
