Forums - Gaming - Why hasn't anyone tried to

Create an FPS that is an hardcore semi-realistic style that instead of focusing on the guns recoil, and the tactics but instead focus on the "Life or Death" realism that comes from the fact you are in "War" and you can die.

Right now in any FPS there is zero consequence for running out and shooting the enemy in the face and take 100 bullets to the chest and die because you only spawn 10 metres back. How about you instead are given 1 life the entire game, you die you go back right to the begining or if the developers want to be an little crazy you spawn in the "War" you are in as an new soldier fresh from base and you are to complete the mission with your new squad while your old one is still fighting it out etc. But the solid pressence, you die you DIE!.

But this doesn't mean the game has to be realistic, the game still has to be fun but whats the fun whenif you die you are going back. Well do you remember playing an game you are on your last life and your final bar of health hitting it out with the final boss. Do you remember your Heart racing and the sweat pouring down you face and the ongoing doubt of will i make it only to win and jump up in cheers of your great victory.

Those moments are extremely rare in Modern games, and for me the last time iu got something like this was playing one game of socom confrontation last year as i picked up that mess for 10 dollars and it was just me and 3 guys left, its one life remaining and i am the last hope for my team. Only hearing that of my heart beats that when i move around the corner and discovered them it was such an adrenlyn rush that even if i died it was exiting and enjoyable that i want to do it again like an drug addict wanting the first high.

These great moments are the bread and butter of great games that every mainstream game lacks and i wonder why any games dev has tried to tap that moment and great an entire game of heart pounding action. An an War shooter where its played out entirely from the first person half life style and you die you die and so you as an player will understand who you really are. Are you an croward stay back and watch your team get slayed or are you the brave one heading out first getting the unknown foe.

And really gamers want this heart pounding moments, thats why mutliplayer is so popular, because the sp have become so lacking that this is what creates those moments and also why search and destroy is so popular in call of duty or why counter strike is still so popular with its heart pounding moments.

But what i think is that the media and publishers and devs think players just like it and dont really get into the Why? factor like multiplayer is also an social outlet for gamers which many are unsocial shy people. But then they release one with an tonne of social features like game lobbies removed etc.

Its i believe that Publishers and Developers have lost touch with the gamers when it comes making shooters.

That would be dumb imo. I don't want to have to worry about going back to the start. I thought we evolved from that as a gaming community.

Steel Battalion had a mechanic much like this, where you could eject from your mech as it was destroyed. If you died, your lost your save file. Ejecting from your mech necessitated buying a new mech - but, as you can guess, lose too many mechs and you won't be able to afford a new one a nyway, and then the same thing happens.

Good times.

Good times.

That would be too hard! lol ........imagine if that happened to COD. bye bye to sales haha

I imagine a MMO war shooter with 3 or more factions in which you can only respawn 3 times a day or sth. like that could be pretty cool. I guess it wouldn't be good to make it subscrition based, so they should probably just sell additional respawns, heh.

I'd like it. I miss the days when games actually had this little thing called "fear of dying."

I have thought of this before. However the games would be too difficult if you took a modern shooter like CoD and made it a single life game. Also it would be highly unrealistic when being compared to real combat. Now I know you may be laughing but in real combat soldiers don't face 20-men in a matter of minutes and do so on their own. In real life you don't need to kill 20 guys to get an air strike.

Now if you were to create a game where you died and stayed dead. You would have to make the game more realistic. More like what actually happens in the wars today. I read an article a few years ago about Iraq/Afghanistan saying most soldiers never even saw combat and the majority of soldiers died from IED's. What combat they did see was hit and run, the Taliban or Al-Qaida would spray bullets randomly at Nato soldiers before running like hell or detonating a bomb.

Also AI would be an issue. The majority of forces the US and her allies encounter today are untrained militia's. The AI in CoD for example is far too smart to give you a realistic game. The Taliban have no training and too few bullets for target practice. So when they attack they do so with very little accuracy, they also have no body armour and a single bullet will immobalize them. While Nato soldiers can sustain multiple bullets thanks to their body armour.

In the end I think a realistic war game would be great. A single life (With body armour), easier more realistic AI, No huge groups of 20 CPU's attacking just you. Air strikes called in any time you meet serious opposition. Civilians in cities and being used as human shields.

But in all honesty, such a war game would not appeal to the action junkies who get their kicks playing CoD. They want 50 CPU's attacking them on their own. They want the difficulty of not having air strikes availible to them most of the time. They don't want their enemies to drop from a single bullet.

Fact is do you want that? Do you want a realistic war simulator? or do you want the hollywood experiance?

I myself would love the realistic war simulator. But I know their aren't enough people out their who do. They want the explosions, non-stop gun fire and unlimited lives.

Didn't COD 4 have an arcade mode? I am pretty sure that there was a mode where you could play through the campaign with a limited number of lives...
