I think the main sales are just deals of the week, there are also little sales frequently, if you just look at the dashboard you'll see announcements for any price cuts, also checking out Major Nelsons blog would probably give you advance warning of some sales, there are also awesome sales during holiday periods, summer and Christmas in particular.
