Forums - Microsoft - Cliff Bleszinski: For Gears 3 Multiplayer, Failure Is Not An Option

IGN

The Gears of War 3 beta launches in late April, six months before the game hits store shelves. Back in 2008, Epic Games did not have a beta of Gears of War 2 and the result was an online multiplayer experience that was broken.

Epic's design director, Cliff Bleszinski, understands. When asked why Epic chose to launch a beta for Gears of War 3, he responded: "Because if we release Gears 3 and it has the same launch as Gears 2 online then the franchise is dead. So you can't afford to make that mistake twice, right? And to be fair over the course of the six title updates, we got Gears 2 in a very good position. And we need to take it to great. And that's what this will help do."

We sat down with Bleszinski for an hour-long discussion about Gears of War and game design. You can hear the full conversation Wednesday, March 9 with the launch of Podcast Unlocked, IGN's official Xbox talk-fest.

I never was a big fan of Gears online but I have quite high hopes that this one will actually be fun.

As someone who plays Gears 2 every night, I'll say you really have to love the gameplay to get into the multiplayer. It's very unforgiving to new players and the difficulty curve is a lot steeper at the bottom than Halo (I haven't played Call of Duty, so I can't comment). That said, when game's are technically solid, it's a whole lot of fun, so hopefully Epic can deliver this in Gears 3.

I don't think it can be better than GOW1 multiplayer, is was very simple yet very fun. Hopefully dedicated servers won't kill off glitching. Kung Fu flipping out of gridlock with sniper with full ammo in never-ending annex player matches. No multiplayer experience can beat that in my opinion.

Yes cheating is the best experience >_>

They had years to fix Gears 2's multiplayer and didnt. I played Gears 1 religously since its launch. Always player games because I could play with others that have a good ping. With gears 2 I gave it a year or so and just couldnt deal with it anymore. The outrageous lag in the majority of games just sucked out the fun of the game. I come back every few months just to see the game is in poor shape as it ever has been. Im really excited about dedicated servers and may renew my faith in the series' multiplayer.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

For veteran fans of the series, that's nice to hear! I enjoyed the Gears 2 multiplayer but not nearly as much as I did the original, so this is encouraging!

I thought the Horde was a nice addition, that wasnt in the original was it... or was that the one I remember it from haha

I used to play gear 1 every day. i feel like i could say i could roll with anyone. and i loved that game, in my opinion  the best shooter game ever. however i loved it because of how different it was. and it was unique. like having 4 on 4 teams playing strategically to win a series. i feel like they failed in gears two when it released and i just had to stop playing it. i hear they tried fixin it but i couldnt get back into it.  id love to get back into gears, nothin will beat gears 1. like tryin those glitches and stuff. it was all just awesome. now i try pickin up gears 2 and im like this feels like an abnormal c.o.d or halo. in gow1 having the skill in shotty or sniper battles to take on multiple ppl at a time to win. just more intense and skilled than any other game.

Gears 2 introduced Horde. It was definitely a nice addition.

I played that for ages and ages. They may improve it somehow in number 3. An 8 player version would be awesome imo
